Default F20A - F18 Cranks...

How come nobody ever talks about the F20A motor? They have a SOHC and DOHC version(which uses an H23 head)... It appears to have the same crank(or at least the same stroke) as the F20B(88mm)... And these motors are about 1/4 the cost of an F20B... I would buy the motor just for the crank... I assume the crank is swappable into any other F/H block with 50mm mains... And I couldn't even imagine using an F18 crank with an 81.5mm stroke... I hope someone has some more info because I am definitely interested in these cranks...

What cars were these motors used in, I don't know anything about them, are they JDM only?

I'm not sure about the F18, however I knew people that had these motors and never questioned them at the time... I believe that the F20A DOHC was in the 90-93 Accord 2.0 SI in japan.. Any engine import site has them for well under $500, as well as ebay has an abundance of them...

I'm trying to find out about the rods in the F18... I'm assuming that they are longer than F20 rods due to the decrease in stroke, but even if you used F20 rods with an F18 crank your r/s would be 1.78... Hello revs...

F20Ax SOHC was used in euro Prelude (4th and 5th) and Accords.
F18A SOHC in Accords (euro)
The complete engine (F20 SOHC) is about 400$ here.

These are the euro applications and I'm sure there a jdm applications as well...
I assume you can get part numbers pentaq? I really want to find out as much as I can about both rod/crank combinations...

Not a problem for euro parts. Let me know which are in your interest.

If the F18 engine has the standard deck height of 8.643" and the piston is the typical 30mm affair then the rods would be in the neighborhood of 148.5mm so that is a r/s ratio of 1.822. Depending on the head and the strength of the rods/crank/block then potentially you can have a rev happy monster but at 1.8l that is one hell of a sacrifice on displacement for a tank of a Lude/Accord. Boost might be a better way to go. Boost plus high revs equals a LOT of horsepower.

I would want to know what the F18 rod dimensions are. If it is the standard .935" width and 2.008" BE then I would be very confident with revving the **** out of it with a rod bolt upgrade.

This is the info I am look for as well...

I am hoping to be able to use this crank with a larger bore of 89mm and still retain 2.0L... I am a boost guy so this motor would be for use with a very large turbo... Like you said: boost plus high revs equals a LOT of horsepower... It also would be a fun N/A motor if you had some HUGE cams and a lighter chassis...

EDIT: The BE bore would most likely be 1.890 like the F20B... My guess is that the cranks are very similar or identical... But people spin F20B rods to 8k+ with no problem...

So, your thinking of the F18crank in a H22a1? for a 2.0 motor?

I wouldnt go that small, remember we dont drive civics... That torque is pretty damn valuable

Targetting a high rev range with the H motors isnt that great of an idea. The valvetrain is super heavy, the transmissions dont like to shift much over 8400 and anything over a 1.6 r/s ratio is crazy overkill IMO

Well I would definately look at this for a boosted motor. Need more torque? Push more pressure.

As far as throwing the cranks and rods into an H22A The only thing I would worry about is difference in compression heights on the pistons and how the CR will drop significantly if the CH happens to be the same. In order to accont for improper CH or CR you have to go with custom pistons and that means sleeving is in order for longevity. then you could go to 2029ccs at 89mm :b

Sounds potentially expensive.

So, is the only difference between the f20a and f20b the heads?

2.0 is small is too small for a prelude? Your not a fan of the F20B? Well this probably would be in a civic or boosted in a prelude... Valvetrain would obviously be upgraded for the revs and larger cams in this motor... You can buy the adapter plate kits to use a B-series tranny on an F/H block... As well as I believe Bisi is producing the kit he used for use with a D-series tranny that he revs the **** out of... And do you feel that a B16 r/s is overkill???

pentaq would have to look up the rod part numbers, i remeber reading a while back that the f20b rods were very beefy and much different than that of the f20a rods, the cranks i would have to assume they are the same , maybe only a difference in balancing

apparently he does..

but anyway, there is a good chance that the cranks between the f20x would be the same but the rods are likely different.

Could you post up the F20B parts numbers as well?

Rather not I have a Japanese EPC but cannot install it as I don't understand any message from this program.

Interesting idea, but I don't see it being anywhere near economical. Just imagine all the things you're going to have to modify/engineer to get it to all work out ideally.

It can probably be done, but it most likely won't make great results, especially when considering the cash and work required.

Ludeykrus, how is your h23vtec doin? running alright? What are your track times/what power are you making? Thanks. As far as Im concerned, I think h23vtec is still the best hybrid motor.

I believe the H23 VTEC is the best hybrid motor that works fairly well with the OEM-designed parts. But I'd still like to give the F23/VTEC motor a try w/ some custom cams and big compression.

I'm actually about to drop in the second H23 VTEC into my car tonight. My first one ran strong, but it slowly lost some compression over a few months, and then I let a washer fall into the motor and it died. I tore it apart and found out that my pistons were apparently way too loose and ate the cylinder walls, requiring a new block.

About halfway through its fairly short life, it ran a 15.1@93 w/ wheelspin (2.5 60' ) at our local shitty track. With camber kits, non-bald tires, and a healthy motor I should be deep into the 14's.......but only time will tell

What parts are you using this time in your engine? btw, what would the displacement be if you bored out to 89mm, combined with the h23 crank?
