Default Questions on the ATS

If some of these are whining, could they require some shimming to mesh the drive teeth?

And am I correct in assuming that because the speedo drive comes off the main shaft and not after the final drive the speedo will still be correct?

Inquiring minds want to know

What fuzznuts said, and no shimming required for mine..... No whining. Some say there is a little because of the helical cut gears... Mine doesn't make a squeak.

How many miles were on dr. pooface's tranny? did you check to make sure it was within spec?

And you are correct on the speedo. The pinion is actually changed to jdm 98spec with the final, whereas the stock one that matches the 4.4 is 96 spec..... We actually get 96 spec trannies.....

Rodney's whines a little sometimes, he had to point it out for me to notice but, I think that you can't usually hear it in his car because of the exhaust. From what he's said and thats probably from Yasu, it usually whines a little. You can hear it when slowing down with little to no throttle. Like he says, "kinda sounds like a supercharger."

His car also has no "Clicking" sound from his ATS/LSD, which according to Yasu is an inhearant sound of the ATS/LSD. So I guess take the good with the bad, I dunno.

But, Yes it does whine. And Geez between all the other sounds the R makes, it's kind of a nice sound in my opinion.

I think Dr. Pooface also mentioned this whining in his post about his ATS FD install

yea, that whining is usually more audible at higher gears and low rpm, but it's a great sound! sounds like a race car's tranny

wow, u'r lucky if u get no clicking sound from the LSD... did he do the figure 8s to break in the LSD? what kind of gear oil too? the gear oil makes quite a big difference

Hmmm... I think that whining is just accelerated wear happening, but prolly noy enough to worry about..

And we didn't know what specs to check in the FD so we checked nothing...

( You gotta tell us these things before we take the tranny apart.. LOL )

Ahh, the tranny only had 10k kms on it, still just a baby. The whine doesn't bother me, it's just good to know it's normal.
