Default Selecting Rod Bearings, need some advice!

I disassembled my motor today so that I can get some machine work done. I have an allmotor B18b that I am sure most of you are familiar with. I am currently getting a competition 3 angle valvejob and a .020" mill. Being poor b/c California is so expensive to live in, I am also porting my own head(nothing crazy though).

Well I pulled the pistons + rods today and I want to replace the OEM rod bearings with some trimetal units from ACL. One problem! I hear that the kits are a "one size fits all", meaning each kit comes in one size and not mixed and matched! Well I want to know is this true?

Also I have all the bearing codes and want to know if anyone would like to give me some advice for ordering after market pieces; b/c OEM come in color codes and aftermarket pieces come in STD, .25 OS, and .50 OS.

Here is the break down:
<FONT SIZE="3">
Cylinder #1:

Crank: B
Rod: 1
Chart calls for <FONT COLOR="pink">Pink</FONT>

Cylinder #2:

Crank: C
Rod: 2
Chart calls for <FONT COLOR="green">Green</FONT>

Cylinder #3:

Crank: B
Rod: 2
Chart calls for <FONT COLOR="gold">Yellow</FONT>

Cylinder #4:

Crank: B
Rod: 2
Chart calls for <FONT COLOR="gold">Yellow</FONT></FONT>

Now I do not know what size exactly each color is and I am asking for some advice for ordering the correct bearings from ACL or another company that offers a tri-metal bearing for a B18a/b.

I need this advice ASAP so I can order these bearings b/c I am turning this stuff over to the shop Monday and should have it back by Thursday or Friday. Any help is appreciated!

Are b16 bearings tri-metal like the GSR/ITR's. If so, then why do most engine builders notch the LS rods to accept teh GSR bearings?

Not doubting you, just curious!

True, i always thought that too..The gsr/itr rod bearings are some of the finest bearings ever made.. Coated and very good wear chareristics..

Im pretty sure the ACL Bearings are all GREEN. In the middle of the Honda Color Code Chart Here:

Rod bearing thickness by color
Blue 1.510-1.507 mm 0.0594”- 0.0593”
Black 1.507-1.504 mm 0.0593”- 0.0592”
Brown 1.504-1.501 mm 0.0592”- 0.0591”
Green 1.501-1.498 mm 0.0591”- 0.0590”
Yellow 1.498-1.495 mm 0.0590”- 0.0589”
Pink 1.495-1.492 mm 0.0589”- 0.0587”
Red 1.492-1.489 mm 0.0587”- 0.0586”

Hope this helps..

According to your chart yellow and green are very similiar in Tolerances, so I could probably get away with the ACL kit!

But what about pink? Doesnt ACL make there kits in different sizes?

If I have the rods re-sized could I get it to where I could use all green! I am having ARP Rod bolts pressed in, so the rods have to be re-sized or does that not make a difference!

Yes the b16a rod bearings are tri metal like the gsr/itr's the difference is that the gsr'/itr's are narrower and have a factory coating on them. Acl's are ok if you are within spec, But i like to stick with oem, especially if you have a pink bearing. Close, and dead on is a big difference when it comes to bearing clearances. I have spoken with Steve/omniman about this and he also prefers to use oem honda bearings also.

the sizes that ACL offers are 10 and 20 over. You cant compare that to honda colored bearing because the oversized bearings from ACL are if you cut the crank due to damage on the journals.

You should always get the rods resized when you have rod bolts pressed in. The pressing in of the bolts changed the geometry of the big end of the rod and the tend to take an Egg Shaped big end. I got my rods resized and it did not change the bearing size. My bearings were all brown for rod bearings so it was a pretty simple job... Its your choice man, i will always go with oem honda...

So just go with OEM B16 bearings? They are Tri-metal, right? They will fit on an LS Rod?

Just checked all the old bearing and they were all marked "STD".

Is there an ACL bearing equivalent to the Honda color code Yellow?

Just ordered ACL Race bearings for a B18b! Slightly looser than the OEM greens. So they are more like the OEM Yellows!

THe ITR Helms supplement rod bearing chart lists two colors per corresponding letter/number box, whereas the GSR only has one color. Does this mean two different colors are to be used or that the range may be one or the other... i.e. can one half be green and one yellow on the same rod?

If so, does the first color listed nessesarily correspond to the upper bearing half?

I will be plastigauging either way but just dont want to order bearing I dont need.
