Default accord only revs to 5000 rpms wtf

the car i am working on is a 95 accord with the 2.2l sohc non v-tech. its an auto and i have been having trouble with the tranny but i think the problems are related.

basically what happens is if i floor it off the line it will get to 5000 rpms and just stay there it wont go any higher therefore it wont shift unless i let off the throttle. it will also do this in nuetral to i can floor it and it will only go to 5000 rpms.

i have only had the car for a week and it has been doing it from dsay one so i dont know how long it has been doing it. also the car has 220k miles on it..

this is a shot in the dark but could it be the cat is causing the problems? i had a neon that the cat broke apart and was causing serious performance problems.

any help would be great.

Check your vacuum at idle and let us know, check it while accelerating in park slowly, if it drops then you have a clogged exhaust. If it is below 18 and possibly down around 15 at idle then I think that your cam timing is off, meaning that the belt has slipped or it wasnt put on correctly in the first place during a belt replacement job, happens a lot you know, let us know please.

Cam timing off by two teeth means 5K RPM max. BTDT

well it is hard to say, it looks like the vacuum would go up when i slowly gave it throttle. is there a guide on how the timing should be set? or a quick way for me to check?

thanks
Danny

timing belt chk as suggested by Duane is good as for the exh if it is plugged i would be surprised that you could reach 5k but try a quick test disconnect frt exh pipe from manifold and retry......to chk timing of course you need a timing lite start car to normal operating temp , on the crank pulley there is a white mark that is your tdc and a bit to the left 3 marks the center 1 red mark is where the car should be timed at the other marks are 2 degree advance or retard ,,if you cannot see the marks cam timing is off ..... i have also seen cars with a bad torque convertor have similar problem
