Default speedometer issue, need help/advice

okay, when drive my car, after like 3-5 minutes my speedometer dies. do anyone know why it's like that? when this happen, if i let the car sit for a while and restart the engine the speedometer will run again but after the 3-5 minutes it'll die again.

i'm thinking that there's a temp issue. but not sure. that's because everytime it dies, i notice that it's when the car warms up to running condition. also the only time the speedometer will start running again is when the engine is cool.

also my rpm gauge run fine. and i never have a issue with it, if that info. is any help.

any help or advice on fixing this issue will be greatly appreicated. i'm not trying to get a ticket for speeding.

not really, it'll run perfectly fine. just that it'll die once the car really gets going. right before the pointer drops dead, it'll go nuts for a split second at whatever speed i'm at and drops to zero.

dizzy is the distributor

is it your engine that dies or just your speedo, as the dizzy going will not effect driveability as the bearings inside them go which then allows oil into the electrics which effects speedo.

the engine doesn't die, just the speedometer. but the rest of what your saying is confusing me. you're talking to a rookie in cars, so a little more explanation might help me out.

The Speed sensor is on the front of the trany close to the exaust. could be that when the car warms up its heating the wire or connection and causing a short.
just a guess.
I have a problem with my connection where it drops out just driving down the street. its just a wire problem but it mostly happens when its warmed up.

the issue could be your vehicle speed sensor i have a friend having the same problems the speedo bounces all around check the local junk yads for another one its fairly easy to replace 2 screws and it pops right out ...where to find it if you look staright down from the battery on top of the tranny you will see a component thats the culprit just change it and the speedo will be on the good foot.

i'm not sure where it at. my cars a 98 civic ex with its stock motor and the battery doesn't sit on top of the tranny like the others that may do. if anyone have a clear pix of the sensor on my engine it'll help alot. as stated before i'm a total rookie in the car scene. every ones help have been appreciate so far. thanks!
