Should I paint my 929 myself? How much to paint a bike? What do you think of my 929?
Whats up guys, I have had this 929 for about two months, and worked through a bunch of problems that it had when I bought it, including a rusted tank, which I replaced with a red one. It was originally all white, but now its half half and i dont like it, and I originally intended to paint it black anyway.
My question is, should I attempt to flat black it with spray paint? I have done this on a couple of my older crx's, and it didnt turn out too bad, also read a very informative post of a guy who spray painted his 600rr that reaped fine results on another site, I dont know if its against the rules to link to other forums. I just don't know if this paint is too nice the way it is for me to be ruining it. I also might want to sell it for an R1.
Now to keep my costs minimal, and have a favorable bike when wanting to trade or sell it, what should I do? I dont like white, but should Ijust have the tank painted white just to have it all one color so it looks nice to potential buyers? Should I attempt to flat black it like I want to? Should I take it to a professional and pay like $800 to just get it a solid gloss black? How much is it to paint all your fairings and your tank in your area?
Also, what do you all think of the bike as a whole? I really like its styling, and enjoy its ride as well. It's only got 4500 miles on it right now, I've been riding it every other day though. Theres a ton of things I want to do to it, but at the same time I don't want to waste money if I'll only be selling it. Having come this far in my post, do you think theres something wrong with the way I think? Am I analyzing things way too much? Should I just go get the **** I want and if a buyer comes sell it? **** I need help...thanks for reading.
Almost forgot, heres a couple pics:

4500 miles on a 929??? i never understood how people could only average ~1k mile a year... rattlecan that tank white and be done with it.
If you wanna go cheap, take it to maaco and get them to paint it for one of their value specials but opt for the urethane or polyurethane clear. Dont want gas spills to ruin your painjob.
Don't rattle can it. It will hurt the resale value of the bike if you plan on selling it unless you sell it to a stunter who is going to beat the hell out of it...
I too love the red/pearl white colorscheme of the 01 929. I was looking to swap body kits before painting mine. If it had to be an american color scheme that is the only one I would have. Otherwise it would be a toss up between the canadian/european colors but I think the black/white/red is the best.
I am not a huge fan of red so I did a replica of the european 954 in pearl white/blue.

from what i understand, it won't be very cheap. i remember talking to one of those 1 day paint shops about getting just a car bumper painted and he quoted me some ridiculous price that did not make any sense. i think he quoted me around $400 for the bumper or $450 to paint the entire car.

Dude how long does it take to pull the tank off on that bike?
It took me less than an hour to pull my tank off and take it to the paint shop (along with the fender and tail section) to have them painted.
I'd just pull the tank, take it to a good body shop, and have them try and match the white. then put on some minimalist decals (if you like decals) and it'll look good as new IMO.

right on, thanks for the responses guys. yeah its got some low mileage thats what attracted me to it in the first place. but the bad thing about it is that it has been sitting all that time, and in some not too good weather.
anyways, why will it hurt the resale value if its a nice flat black? i can understand if its ugly and i **** it up, but if its a solid clean all flat black job it shouldnt be a problem.
also, places here rip on paint. thats why i asked, how much you guys get charged for your paint jobs, but no input on that yet. any more input, thanks.

I paid 800 for mine (blue/white 929) and I was not really pleased with the results but then again I am a stickler for details.
That was with no body work, just prep and paint.
I was quoted by the local bike painter (psycho cycles) 1200 for a two tone paint job 800 for a single color a few yrs back on my f3. The have now established a good reputation so I would assume they would charge way more.....
I had a buddy who took his zx12r fairings into the local bodyshop and had it painted black with a blue pearl (tri coat paint job). They charged him 350 for the complete paint and there was light rash from driveway knockover.
Keep this in mind, the puffy kawasaki emblem on the tank was painted over and the side fairing 'wings' were painted in place (not removed and painted individually).
It was more or less a scuff and sand. The body shop will charge an extra 100-200 dollars if they have to remove/remount all the body fairings so you can save yourself some work if you take the bodykit off and remove all the rubber grommets etc.
If you do sell it and you are honest about the paint being spraypainted do you not think that a potential buyer would be willing to pay less for a spray painted bike?
The thought in my mind would be 'if the guy is too cheap to put a decent paint job on the bike, what else did he do half assed on it.' Plus you would have to worry about gas/oils causing the finish to come off.
Either way it is up to you.

hey man, great post. good ideas. yesterday as i was sanding the fairings down, i thought about it, and it would have been a bitch to finish, and yeah, fricken flat black spray paint is not too guarans. so, i called up some friends and went to my friends paint shop here, he said he can do it for 350 including materials.
so yeah im gonna have them gloss black it for me. feel better now i'm having it done, rather than yeah, half assing it myself. thanks again.

also, i ordered a complete fairing screw kit for my bike from http://www.tastynuts.com thumbs up to them

If you wanted to go flat black, they can add a flattening agent in the clear so the clearcoat is not shiney. That way you would get the flat black look you want with a coat of clear over it for protection.
Are they tasty nutz you ordered aluminum or titanium? My buddy had a set of those lockhart phillips aluminum ones and the heads would twist off of em if you would tighten em just a hair too much.
Hopefully these aren't that soft.

Not to ***** your topic up, but this is definately related. I recently purchased a bike with the intentions of having it professionally painted a matte black. 2 coats of base, 3 coats of clear, and here's how it looks:

The paint is 100% smooth, no runs, no trash, no fisheyes, etc. The key is making sure the paint os smotth enough to not need wet sanding/buffing, because you cannot do that with the matte or "eggshell" finishes.
IMO the matte black looks totally bad-*** on a lot of different bikes, but if you try it yourself it might prove difficult/near impossible because it has to be perfect the first time seeing as how it cannot be worked over/buffed after it's done.
Also I'd let them handle any prepwork, because painting is like 50/50 prep and paint. Also make sure they sand the stickers all the way off, or else the outlines will raise up in the paint.
You ever seen a 2004 Honda Interceptor 800 in Asphalt Black? Same concept:

Again it's a matte finish. I tried to get the body shop that did my bike to get that exact color, but it was special order, too expensive, and since they painted mine for free I asked to see color swatches and I actually liked what I got a bit better.
Good luck man! Go matte black! Hell go naked! Pull the fairings off!

haah, hey man, i reviewed your post a couple times too, before even making this thread, and i gotta say, very nice turnout. flat black is the sickness, i practiced on my own on an extra tail fairing i had and it didnt come out too bad, but i know what you mean about wetsanding, still had scratches in it.
the tastynuts pro bolt kit i purchased is the anodized aluminum fairing kit. it doesnt come with directions or wellnuts, so i gotta find out what goes on what.
well once i get my fairings back ill show you guys the finished product of the bike, probably in a new thread. the bike's been through a lot. thanks for all your commments and support guys.

Hmmm, I know they can add a flattening agent to the clear to make the clear dull so the paint would look like a flat color. I guess it is easier/cheaper to do a single stage paint job in a flat color.
Personally I would do the 2 part paint with a flattened clear for the added protection.

i'm also contemplating painting my gixxer like this, but using the matte/textured spray paint...just sand it down good and be smooth when it comes to the can, it'll be aight
Yeah my homeboy is going to paint his bike (05 gixxer) all black with lost souls skulls fading from front to back. Anything black bikes is sick IMO.
here's a gsxr 1K all done by hand with spray paint too!
looks good to me, even tho' i'm not a fan of chrome/polished stuff

flat black bikes, go for it,heres mine.
all rattle can. it looks good, but I would try to shoot it out of a gun if you can.

Black wheels go a long way on the flat black bikes too. i have found that Dupli-color flat black wheel paint works awesome. It ends up being a matte finish more than a really flat finish.
I used this paint to paint the white wheels on my wife's bike matte black, and it literally shaved 10 years off of how the bike looks. White wheels scream "look at me! i'm from 1991!"
