Default 5th gear, to be or not to be

Hey all, I'm having a strange problem with my 88 Accord. I just bought it and the clutch was bad, after tearing it down I found the throwout bearing had seized and wore through the pressure plate. To get the car home however I had to synchronize shift it which got me home to pull it apart. Although, when shifting it I found that when shifting into 5th gear it didn't appear to function. When shifting into 5th and hitting the gas it felt like it was in neutral, it did feel as if it shifted fully into gear though, so I was thinking a broken shift fork for 5th in the tranny or bad linkage until I realized it doesn't have the cable linkage. Well, got the tranny out and is on the bench and shift through the gears and 5th appears to engage and when the input shaft is turned the output shafts turn as they should it seems. Maybe since I was synchronize shifting it, it just wouldn't let it into gear fully? Any ideas, I don't wanna tear this tranny down if I don't have to. Thanks for any input you can provide.

most common problem and i have seen a few of these of 5th gear not engaging is that people have been putting 90w oil in tranny thus being so thick it does not lube 5th gear assembly and eventually gear burns up , you can check it be removing the rear cover 5th gear is right there i bet you it will look hot and burnt
let me know

Well, 5th gear is toast. I found replacement gears from Transmission Exchange for $89 though. Locally they wanted $250 which is insane. I don't know where they come up with that kind of pricing on just 2 gears. I still need a throwout bearing fork for this tranny though and might have to just bite the bullet and get it from Honda. I can't believe how bad these gears looked.

Anyone know where I can get a throwout bearing fork for this tranny for cheap?

You could go to the local parts shop and see if they have a throwout bearing for your application. I dunno if they carry shift forks there. Maybe a transmission shop??? if not you might have to order from Honda.

Well, I emailed some pics of my tranny to transmission exchange and they had the fork for me too, $25. I needed synchros for my geo metro too and they had them as well, $15 a piece, way cheaper than I'd have to pay for them in town here.
