koni reds adjustability
i bought koni reds for a bone stock replacement shock. I was wondering if they came from factory already adjusted as stock, and if so what is stock? I was reading how to adjust it, and at what setting does it come. If i were to install it without messing with it, it would just have stock settings? thanks
I paired my Reds with some off-the-shelf rate Ground Control springs and set them midway in their adjustment range. Doing this provided enough dampening for those springs and also gives me another 2 turns of adjustability so that when the shock shows signs of wear on this middle setting, I can just tighten it back up.
These are on a stock 99 hatch, BTW.

so if i just installed the koni reds from the box without playing with adjustment, it should already be set at stock? and if so, what is stock setting?
I really don't recall. When I took them out of the box, I wanted to dick around with adjusting them - to see how it worked and such. And so when I was done messing with them, I went ahead and set them to the middle as per CRX Lee's recommendation (he is a factory rep for Koni here on Honda-Tech).
But....its quite easy to adjustment them - just go ahead and do it yourself. Its not hard at all to just set them where you want them.

i'm thinking bout setting the shocks to 3/4 turn from full soft. Any idea how that will ride on stock shocks and stock height? Im looking for just slightly stiffer than stock. According to koni, the reds are adjustable to 2.5 turns. so 3/4 would be 30% stiffer than full soft.

When i got my koni yellows and pulled them out of the box they were set to full soft, not sure if that is anywhere near stock on the reds, but they are most likely set to full soft out of the box.
The max according to the instructions that came with my koni yellows say that 720 degrees is the max (the instructions are for both the reds and the yellows), so I wouldn't go to 2.5 turns if you ask me. But 3/4 turn sounds like a good idea. They are the reds so that should not be too stiff at all, but this is just an assumption based on my yellows. Besides spring rate has more to do with comfort than damping IMO.
Just try a setting and see how you like it. The stiffer you set them, the less adjustment you can get out of them before they wear out. If putting them at the softest setting gets the job done, then when they wear out, you can give them a turn and re-stiffen'em.
So....go with the lowest setting that gets the job done for you. I'm using GC springs (which are Eibach), which are stiffer than stock, and felt midway adjustment was just fine.
