Default Advice

My friend has a type R and he wants to lower it, but does not want to lose the handling the Type R has. He wants it to be as good as or better then stock but with a little lower stance. Iv already searched for a while and havnt came up with anything. The question is, someone gave him four tokico blue shocks with lowering springs. But he can only use the front two. Would the car be okay if he used the two front tokico blue's with two rear koni yellows? Would the car get messed up because not all four are the same? another question is should he use the non-brand blue lowering springs already on the tokico's or use yellow neuspeed's. I appreciate any advice given. thanks

The car would likely be fine with the mismatched suspension, but not handle well at all.

Do you know the spring stiffness and length of the two springs (non-brand vs. Neuspeed)?

He'd be better off getting new stuff all around. Omnipower is a cheap way to do it, works well for me. You can find Omnipower coilovers for $600 or so, shipped.

As Chris mentioned, Omnipower is usually the way to go, but there are far more options. Consider Buddy Club, Tein RA, Mugen, Zeal, etc.

Oh yeah, lots of choices, lots of "better" suspensions, but in terms of bang-for-the-buck Omni does it. Improved handling over stock, coilover makes it fully height adjustable for that slizzamed ride.

Because having a slizzamed ride is the most important thing.

if your friend is not planning on doing a lot of track driving and is simply after the "lowered" look along with some improvement in handling, you should consider the bilstein sports.

there are two height settings and the shocks are valved to work with the oem itr springs. great value! i've seen them on shox.com for $449. there are probably other cheaper vendors, but that gives you an idea on cost. if i weren't tracking my car, i would probably be running these.

Really, if you are going to cheap out (used Tokico blues and no-name spring is cheaping out; OmniPower is cheaping out; really anything less than $1000 for springs and shocks is cheaping out on a Type R) then you are better off staying stock. The stock R is a really good ride handling compromise.

There is a guy who frequents this forum who autocrosses a Type R in STX and has a nice setup (I think his name is typer801) Ask him what he uses.

The Omnipower Sport ride quality is "good" considering it's 12K/10k. You can't run stiff springs and not expect a bit of a harsh ride.

It's also an improvement in handling.

What's the issue now? Why am I better off staying stock?

So let me get this straight, you're putting an obligatory minimal dollar amount on what qualifies as a "good" or "worthwhile" suspension improvement for the R?

Rubbish.

There are plenty of suspensions, JDM at that that cost more than your minimal $1,000 buy in that are total crap.

I guess then that according to your "cheaping out", a set of used revalved adjustable Koni Yellows and Ground controls with your chosen rates is "cheaping out" as well, and not worth it. Regardless if many real racers use them and that they really Are that good despite being affordable.

I think I may be just misunderstanding you OR taking your words out of context.

I really appreciate everyone giving there advice. My friend has decided not to go with the tokico shocks and the non-brand springs. He has decided to save up for a decent setup like omnipower, bilstein, or koni yellows. Thanks for everyones reponse's, you guys really helped him out.

Here's a good example of affordable setups:

http://www.redshiftmotorsports.com/suspension.htm

You can get the coilovers for about $300. and the shocks for about $600. more or less depending on what you choose.

Just have your friend contact someone from http://www.ground-control.com/ or Chris from redshift to discuss application and preferences.
