Default Sound Deadening a '97 Civic

I'm putting some sound damping material in my 97 civic sedan. But in many places, first in the trunk and now I see it under the carpet in the cabin floor, there is already some type of black hard plastic material applied to the metal (I can take pictures if it will help anyone). It looks like it could be a sound deadeding material, but it certainly isn't doing a good job. I haven't checked the doors yet, but I'm going to assume it is not there. Anyway, the deadening material im using doesn't stick well to this plastic stuff. Removing it doesn't really seem possible as it is quite hard and affixed very well. I've only peaked under the carpet to see this stuff and I don't want to take out all my seats and carpet just to find out that I can't put down my sound deadener.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Experience with deadening a car with this stuff?

you can just glue it down over the stock dampening material. what kind of mat are u using?? The reason why I ask is cause that stuff is heavy and unless you dont care about weight, you can almost always find lighter mat.

oh yeah, there isnt any on the doors. you need to cut strips about 1" x2.5" to go on the inner skin of the outer shell on your doors. I did all of this on a 95 cp I had a frew years ago.

I'm using the polymeric mastic from mcmaster.com. And i'm not too concerned about weight.

I'll try putting it over the existing stuff. thanks.

No prob, If the glue on the back of the mat that u have isnt strong enough to bond itself, you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and get some spray adhesive. Make sure you get the 3M brand adhesive. There are 2 different types that you can buy, get the more expensive one(it'll only be a couple of bucks more), It always works waaaaaaaay better.

Good luck!!
