So ive been using 87Octane in my 00 B16 for 8K Miles.

Default So ive been using 87Octane in my 00 B16 for 8K Miles.

I feel absolutley no difference in performance in mileage and I recently did a compression test and the same exact results. I abuse my car and rev it to 8K daily so im wondering why should I go back to 91 instead of sticking to 87? I only use 76Gas 87contane BTW.

Because a higher octane rating allows for greater compression without detonation, running 87 octane in your 10.5:1 B16A is asking for trouble. Ever hear the sound of marbles coming from your engine when you're on the gas?

Because of detonation. You may not experience any problems, but under the right conditions, it could eventually ruin your motor. High intake temps, heavy loading, mountain driving etc can all cause detonation. Your knock sensor can dial back a bit, but it can't prevent detonation under extreme conditions.

Oh trust me dood I know how knocking sounds. But i dont hear anything but to be on the safe side Ill just go back to 91. I started doing this when gas skyrocketed.

maybe your compression ratio is already that low, so don´t recognize a difference from high-octane fuel ...

I´d prefer driving some gas with higher octane............just to know theres not even a CHANCE of knocking

well the higher the octane burns slower so you should be getting more mileage maybe it just not that noticeable but yo should get more miles to the gallon.

Stock or not, the B16 runs very high compression and needs to have high octane to run properly and safely.

It doesn't burn 'slower' it has a higher flash point and resistance to burn. A lower octane will detonate early on the compression stroke of a high compression motor due to the pressure and heat. The higher resistance to burn of high octane will prevent this from happening.

those of u that run premium and also mid-grade.do u notice a difference? i run premium because it only costs me 15 dollars anyways to fill it,so id rather have that assurance for 4 more dollars with the premium.

Seriously; if you run cheap gas, you will be spending plenty more than what you saved on your motor at some point.

the knock sensor takes care of the 87 octane gas, thats why u havent noticed it, dont u think honda would have thought some one would put the low grade gas in it eventually??? u will just lose some power that u may not notice without a dyno telling u that ur making 7hp less than before, u should run premium gas and not the low grade ****. trust me when revving to 8K and and ur knock sensor can't retard enough to keep up with the detonation of the low grade gas ur gonna fu** something up eventually. might go for along time without noticeable problems, but its doin its damage little by little.

hey Bauley where do you get 10.5? a 1st gen JDM B16A is 10.2:1, a second gen JDM B16A is 10.4:1, a B16A3 is 10.2:1(US DelSol VTEC), and the B16A2(00 Si) is 10.2:1. Have i missed some new discovery?

If 10.2:1 thru 10.4:1 is very high compression what is 11:1 thru 12.5:1

The only way to truly tell the difference of the affects of the octane level is on a dyno.

I myself had a 1st Gen JDM B16A In a 1991 Civic Si, and never noticed a diference in any of the octane levels at the track. My best times were using 87 octane, 14.6-14.7 respectively.

My question to the topic creator when you say 2000 B16, what exact engine do you have?

Im running 98.. knocking can go over 100 sometimes when I use 95 octane.. with 98 max i measured is 77,, still high.. car need to re-tune

You're going to spend a couple bucks extra per tank for running higher octane. If you can't shell out $3 more per tank, you should either not drive like a jackass or take mass transportation.

Yeah, the discovery that I don't give a **** what the compression on a B16 is, sorry I was off by .3 your highness. As far as I know, you need to run the highest octane gas possible on motors that are above 10:1, but I could be wrong.

here in kuwait its 85 cents per gallon for premium, holla!

Chill dude, i wasn't busting your *****. I cant agree totally on the 10:1 or higher running the highest possible octane. the ecotec cavalier is just one other car that i know of that has 10:1 compression ratio and requires only 87. it all depends on what the igntion values are of the computer.

on another note................

I would use the lowest possible octane i could that wont cause detonation. the lower the octane the lower the flash point. The octane number isn't a power rating, but a number derived from a fuels ability to resist knock. the numbers you see at the pump are an average of two measurements, MON and RON. I have seen cars lose Hp on the dyno by switching to a higher octane fuel than what they needed.

higher octane wont add power, it will only help reduce the chances of detonation, and only restore power lost from detonation or preignition.

LOL gotta love the after math of someone being proved wrong.
I think that running 87 would be fine as long as you dont rev the car to **** every gear. But it's also like Ricey said, they don't recommend premium for no reason.

I run a basicly stock d16z6 with a CAI and I can notice a difference between gas, I also live in wisconsin so we run that alternative fuel crap here which makes a difference as well (I hate that stuff). For the few dollars more it cost to use better gas why gamble?

would you care to elaborate more on what "basically stock" means?

would you elaborate more on noticing a difference between gas?

do you fill up with the same brand all the time? do you buy where ever is cheapest or closest? not all companies fuel is equal.

Shudders....my Prelude made them sounds. Ofcourse it had 200k on it, and a blown headgasket...but it loved the redline still!
