Default failed smog at state ref... did most of the basic tune ups already... here are myNums

HC
............MAX....GP....MEAS
15mph..116...291...305
25mph...91... 241...100

CO
............MAX....GP....MEAS
15mph..0.74...2.24...0.33
25mph..0.62...2.12...0.19

NO
............MAX....GP....MEAS
15mph..791...1992...745
15mph..730...1792...427

i changed my cap/rotor/plugs/wires a few months ago. Changed out my o2 sensor a few months ago. Changed out my bad knock sensor just recently. Timing is on que except i idle a little high. Drove around for a while to make sure my cat was hot. cleaned out my egr and iacv recently as well. on another note, it does feel like i misfire in first gear if i try to punch it sometimes.

my HC's are extremely high and my NO is pretty close @ 15mph... CO passed easily... does this point to my cat then since all other minor tune ups was taken care of? stupid state ref =[

what you get in O2 and CO2, it can help with diagnostics. do a compression test, your engine might be worn out.

A new cat remedied my uber high nox readings.

How many miles are on your car?

I'm not too great with smog and some times tend to get a little confused but it seems like you are running extremely rich, specially at 25 mph. Either that or the damn cat is shot...

cat effects the NOx. HC is from basic tuning.... if you have dont everything to tune your car you might just have a worn motor.... you might be back firing.... you may need more tuning done with timing and much other stuff.

sounds like your cat is bad, because yourco2 is pretty high, but it also seems like your running on the ritch and advanced side because of the nox and hc, and co. man am I glad I took that drivability class now

I had a bad cat in my 16v GLI... my numbers were through the roof. A new cat and o2 brought it all down to passing, but it brought the nox down the most.

I would say check and recheck your timing, spark plug gaps, and your cat.

Sometimes using different plugs for emissions helps to pass (ones that run hotter, or something, Im not too sure on how it works but it worked for my 86 accord maybe someone with understaning in ICE and how exactly the gap affects the combustion can chime in here)

ic. you guys think a new cat will bring down my hc's enough to pass? or maybe ill try the sea foam route first.

your NOX gas is too high. Might want to look into replaceing your cat or it might be that your EGR valve isn't working properly. One of these should solve your problem.

Sorry, I made a mistake, both parts will help bring down all your numbers. You should be able to pass smog. I'll double check tonite with my smog tech. (I'm a certified mechanic) so I have a lot of smog tech's that look out for me.

hm, finally got a chance to take out my spark plugs and check em out. iirc from the diagnosis colors, my plugs seem to be operating just fine. Someone please correct me if im wrong. I was under the impression that i would find my plugs black as hell as people thought, from my numbers and description, that i'd be running extremely rich.

those are ngk irridiums. i do have slight misfire sometmies in first gear so that prob leads to either injectors or timing now right? and as for the smog numbers, its gotta be the cat then yah?

thanks for all the help guys

retard your timing to about 13 and run 100 octane gas, my #'s were almost exactly as yours and thats how i passed, the ref is the one who told me to retard/run 100 octane

I second that. I took my car into the ref today and tried to get my car barred but it faild also because my HC's was too high. the ref's werent supposed to say anything or tell you what need to be fixed. I tried asking him what could be the problem to why my HC's was so high..all he said was take it to a local smog repair station and they'll know what to do because we dont diagnose any cars here. I cant tell you what to do or whats wrong with it.

i helped a guy with this idea to pass the cali smog test in his crx use meth in the gas tank all cars can use up to 10% on the stuff in the gas. It will bring your numbers down a lot.

similiar problem, although mine isnt that high but high enough to fail the HC, wat i did is use gas 87, full tank, set my timin at 14, and did a retest and it pass, iono if that gonna help ya, then my brother car, the number is similar to ur, all he did is change oil, fuel injector cleaner and gas treatment i think, then drive it hot as for awhile to get it fully hot, then test again, it reduce the number down alot, but that test is done in a smog only test, should be the same wit ref...i did mine in ref station...
