Default cruise control light

On my 98 GS-R, you know the cruise control button...it does not light up. When all my other dash lights are on, this one never is...I just figured it doesn't have a light. Then randomly yesterday I looked over and noticed the light was on for a minute then it went off, I can't remember if I hit something, or what!
I'm talking about the actual "cruise control" lettering lighting up, NOT the slotted light indicating cruise is engaged.

I'm just a little confused as to why it did that, because for that one time was the only time I ever saw it lit up. Doesn't make sense.
