Default Exhaust wraps- noticable power increase or a liability?

i have heard both sides of the argument- exhaust wraps/jackets increase power but will make your header crack after a while. so what's the scoop? are they worth it? how much power can be expected?

or ?

wouldnt think you would see much of a power gain, mostly just reducing underhood temps.

I will be wraping my manifold, DP, and charge pipe.

i would be carefully though. i saw a video a little while ago on here of a vw burning to a metal box because the wrap caught fire .

What did he wrap his header with? Newspapers? I don't think header wrap is made from a combustable material. Otherwise, it would catch fire the instant your engine warms up. Remember that exhaust is typically around 1200 degrees F. And those tubes are VERY hot.

By the way, if you have a cold air intake, header wrap would probably do nothing for power output.

I thought that part of the power output came from keeping the heat in the pipes and that sped up the exhaust gases?

technically it does, how much you'll see is the question, of course. i don't think it'd be noticible, unless you're driving really fast, and even moreso in cold weather.

my DC ceramic coated header did very well with header wrap from thermotec. i dont really care for all those reports about headers cracking because of header wrap. i never experienced it.

i have nothing to say bad about it. power gains? nothing recorded, but theoretically its beneficial. engine temps down? its still hot in there. but im sure it helped.
