Gauge wiring question (NOT the standard "where do I mount the sensor")
I'm installing a set of Autometer electric gauges (3), and I have the sensors all in place. However, I'm a little unclear as to what I can get away with when it comes to wiring the gauges inside the car. For each gauge, I need 2 grounds, 1 illumination, 1 sensor, and 1 ignition wire. What's stopping me from combining all 6 ground wires, and the 3 illumination and ignition wires, and just running one larger wire to a single ground, a single illumination, and a single ignition? That will drastically reduce the number of wires I need to have come out of the gauge pod. Will combining all the ground wires interfere with the signal? It just seems strange that the gauge would have separate grounds for the light and the gauge, so it made me think I should ask. Thanks for any help!
It sounds like you are right on target. You can tap 1 wire into each of the dimmer leads for power, ground, illumination dimmer & that way you only have to deal with the individual sensor wiring.
My guages in the autometer instrument cluster bezel (H20temp & oil pressure) have been in & working that way for a year or so w/no probs. It's standard wiring procedure.
Do yourself a favor & ignore most of the crap on the instruction manual except for the sendor wiring.
