help with putting in axle!
hey guys im having a lot of trouble installing my new axle for my b16a 88crx dx. the thing is we got the non-abs brake axle. is this the one i need? i cant fit the axle into my car. anyway help ASAP would be very appreciative thank you very much!
its the driver side, the axle is the exact same as the broken one. whats the intermediate shaft? and yes i removed the dust ring from the spindle.. im about to take off the entire hub to get this stuff done!!
you have to remove the lower ball joint from the control arm, did you do that? if the old one was broke you could probably take it out without removing but you will need to lift the hub off the control arm to get it in, its pretty strait forword, if you cant get the axle off the intermediate shaft remove it as a whole and bang it off when its out of the car
i have the old axle out and i moved the control arm. do i still have to worry about the intermeddiate shaft, i thought you only had to worry about that when you are getting the axle out? anyway, im going to try today. should i just remove the hub in general and reinstal it on the new axle or what?
cliff notes version on axle replacement:
1.) loosen lugnuts. pull your ebrake if it isnt already. use a ballpeen hammer and a screw driver to bend the spindle nut into a circle again. loosen spindle nut with half inch driver.
2.) put car on jacks.
3.) remove strut arm (the fork looking arm)
4.) remove cotter pin from castle nut on lower ball joint and remove castle nut
5.) jack the hub up to the point where the car is almost jacked off your jack stands, making sure the jack is not on the lower ball joint stud.
6.) using a ballpeen hammer, hit the suspension arm on the side right next to the lower ball joint. after several whacks the ball joint should free itself and the lower arm should drop.
7.) lightly tap the axle inward to free it from the hub
8.) using a prybar, free the axle from the transmission.
9.) pull out axle. install new axle. make sure axle rests flat to the transmission (this should take a good shove or two).
10.) put it all back together. voila.
