Honda Accord A/C Problem Diagnosis
I will be attempting to repair an A/C problem on my daughter's 92 Accord LX. I have a fair amount of experience in fixing A/C systems (and even had the time to install the A/C on my 83 Civic Wagon before I had 5 kids).
The A/C will operate very well on occassions, somewhat puny on others, and not at all at others. By this, I mean the temperature of the discharged air. From this behavior, I have concluded that the problem is not with the compressor or clutch, but more likely a sticking expansion valve. I suppose it could also be a malfunction of the high pressure cutout, but I think I recalled seeing the clutch engaged when it was in one of it's "blowin' hot" moods. If my observations are correct, am I on the right track with the expansion valve? If it is the high pressure cutout, is this sensor connected to the system through a Shrader valve like some GMs so that I don't have to depressurize the system to replace it?
Thanks in advance,
Ron

another thing to check is the pressure on the high and low side and also check to ensure that your heater valve is closed when it is blowing warm air.
ok toll lets do the eliminating process
we know it IS NOT the fuses , and it IS NOT a heater valve issue , because as you stated it cools well at times . if heater valve were at fault it would stay warm all the time ..
when a/c blows hot , if the compressor IS engaged like you stated you tought it might be you could be low on freon thus working well in am or late when it is not so hot outside and working like crap during the heat of the day or it could be an expansion valve acting up intermmittently to properly diagnose those i would need to know pressure readings on both low and high side ...
If compressor IS NOT engaged when a/c is hot well then it could be a # of things
a/c clutch gap could be too wide, cooling good in am and nights but not engaging during heat of day ,
if compressor in not engaged and FANS ARE ON you got an issue with the compressor power side of the circuit,, relay, coil. wiring,
IF FANS DO NOT COME ON when a/c is hot it is an issue with ground side . thermostatic switch in the evap, high pressure switch, a/c switch inside car, wiring ,ground side of the relay.... for that you would have to do some diagnostic work ..
so take another look to see if compressor is engaged when a/c blows hot and let me know and if you can get pressure readings that would be a big help
