Default What happened to my distributor?

i was driving on the parkway when all of a sudden my car just shut off... the rpms went down to zero but the radio and lights worked fine. I pulled the msd cap off and noticed that the inner teeth of the dizzy were gone. could this have cause my distributor to mess up all together? i have a new msd cap and rotor that installed and nothing it doesn't start. the cap is clear red and i don't see any spark. what could this be? what should i test? how do i go about checking it? Thanks in advance.

Reggie

Sounds like you have no batt power. Check the batt or alt.

wouldnt that mean his radio and lights wouldnt work if he had no battery power?

well i would say alternator or battery too. your battery could have just enough juice to run the lights or radio. that doesnt take as much juice as having a car start up, etc..i would check those 2 first since it would be the easiest thing to check

i already tried jumper cables and the car cranks hard but does not start. would the alternator cause no spark to be thrown my the dizzy?

brownish red dust is usually a good sign of bearing failure in a dizzy. I don't want to tell you to go get a new one without being able to see it, or test it, but it's pretty likely it died.

Is the rotor spining when you crank?

Usually it's the timing belt when a car dies like that though I did have a distributor lock on me but that was in my '67 stang.

you said the teeth are gone? did you replace the cap? is your rotor all screwed up? you can also pull teh dist. and check the bering by checki9ng fof play in the shaft

if there wasn't play in it, then what would have killed the teeth in the cap? I lost one that way 6 months ago on my H.

tried again last night and nothing. i'm getting a back fire coming out of the throttle body at times. i also checked the timing belt and cam gears. could the backfire be from the gas that has probably accumulated in in the chamber? anyone else?

here's the latest... i forgot that the dizzy i used we converted to obd1 from obd2 so the firing order was different. when i changed the firing order the car cranked, started for about 2 seconds and died. this was after changing my alternator. should i change it back? could it be the battery?
