Buddy goes to the hospital...
Just thought I'd add another wreck story to the mix...
I've been away for the last 2 weeks, so I met up with the guys I ride with last night at a club in DC. The guy I'm closest to in the group and who introduced me to everyone else had obviously had a couple of drinks and was about to get into a fight outside the club. After a lot of posturing and an appearance by some law enforcement personnel, we decided to leave and finally convinced the somewhat drunk guy to leave with us.
There are 5 of us in all (4 Ravens and one Red), not counting a few cars with some of our friends in them. We cross the Key Bridge back into Virginia, with the drunk guy (on the red R6) popping some insane wheelies on the way. He's wearing a jacket and helmet but no gloves.
We stop to make a few calls, at which point it is determined that we're going to some kind of after-hours party at a club in DC. So we head back into the district via the Whitehurst Freeway, which is an elevated highway along the Potomac River. I'm in the lead, and at the end of the highway, I stop at the red light, along with another rider.
All of a sudden, I hear the blaring of the red R6's brand-new D&D pipe, and he comes charging down the ramp on one wheel, splitting both of us. I watch in horror as the front wheel keeps going up, up, up...
I was totally frozen. I'm still not entirely sure how it happened, but he fell off the bike at what looked like more than 25mph. The bike kept going, and he fell right on his *** and rolled over about 10 times before coming to a stop.
I went right to the bike to try to get it moving again, and the rest of the guys tended to the guy who had gone down. The clutch was gone, and it was leaking fluids all over the road.
Cops and ambulance came, and started asking questions that no one really wanted to answer. Most of the riders didn't have the proper license or insurance, so there were a lot of silently shrugged shoulders.
The guy ended up being mostly ok, and while in the hospital he asked "Where's my bike, I wanna ride it home." At least he was able to keep his sense of humor.
What a night.

I have no sympathy for drunk drivers/riders. To be honest, I've lost some respect for you because you let him ride given his state.
Remind me never to have you introduce me to these people.

Agreed.. its frustrating to know people drink when they know they'll be riding home.

Did you at any point ask him what the hell he was thinking? I mean drinking and riding? Doing wheelies on public road? Most of all though doing both WHILE running a red light? Dude's lucky his brains aren't on the grille of a tractor trailer right now.
He got REAL lucky. Hopefully it only takes him one lesson the hard way.

Not to beat it to death but seriously.... the strikes just add up.
-Riding drunk and endangering others
-Letting someone ride drunk who could very well have taken you out too
-Stunting while drunk
-Running a red light while stunting and drunk
-Riding without proper license and insurance
Remind me again how you're helping the motorcycling community? These are the people that give the rest of us the bad name.

Don't worry. These guys inhabit their own world which would probably not be to the liking of most in this forum. I'd prefer to keep that separate from riding with 'normal' peeps. They're a bunch of rich foreigners, so they operate under totally different rules. Total the bike? No insurance? No problem. Buy another one.
If it were just you and I, and you were wasted, I'd never let you get on your bike. However, my role is a bit different in that crowd, and the guys are a bit less mature and a lot more stubborn.
I'm not going to try to defend anything the guy did. We can all agree it's about the dumbest set of actions you could possibly want to take.

I kinda understand you situation but you need to realize that they are also putting you at risk when you ride with them. I've seen tons of accidents where riders have been hit by other riders in there group. Imagine he didn't split you two and just smashed into you while you were stopped
I know you can't tell them what to do but for your own sake think about the risks.

Yeah, I'd agree. I had a friend who used to always drive drunk... that was until I realized that his choices were not only endangering himself and others on the road but also myself. I have chosen not to hang around him any more in an effort to avoid putting myself in that situation.

I understand your position in that group. Unless I was a friend and or a respected member of their group, my words probably wouldn't be taken very seriously. And I wouldn't bend over backwards and be their den mother.
As for riding w/someone drunk, I'd just try to stay clear from them and probably ride in the back of the pack.
I've learned from my own mistake, I was drunk and started to hotdog in the parking lot and almost ate *****. Since then, never again. Now I'm adamantly against drinking and riding (and driving, got a deuce last year
)

I'm definitely the guy's friend, but the other guys are a lot closer to him. I'm the only American in the group, and I'm really not yet in a position to give him any orders.

Jesus christ, thats why I never even ride my bike when I go out on the weekends. I won't even have one beer if I'm riding.
I wish him a speedy recovery. But maybe you should find some other people to ride with, before it's you in the hospital.

I understand your point, but here is the problem. If you informed him that he shouldn't ride, and you try several times, then you need to make the decision to call it a night and go home. If he is willing to take the risk, and his friends let him, then game over.

Your "friends" sound like really intelligent people. Obviously you were drinking as well, no? Or did you just go to the bar and drink cranberry juice and water the whole time? And were planning on sipping Evian at the after party?

Maybe he'll make it through this and realize he's a complete tool and sell his bike and walk.

The whole lot of them deserve to have the **** slapped out of them. What would've happened if he ran into a car with a young child or something in it?? There's no excuse for these losers and they should all have their bikes taken away and made into track bitches.Shall we assume you were loaded also? Not to put you in the spot, just curious if you were just as far in ther wrong as they all were.

If I had been, I would have said as much.
I said my piece about being careful before the ride began, but grown adults don't have to listen. I wasn't about to wrestle him for his keys.

The question is, will you put yourself in that situation again knowing what choices their going to make? If so, that makes you no better than them because you're condoning the behavior.
