Default Need some CV joint help

Ok, I am trying to take the CV joints, half shafts, or whatever you want to call them, off of my car. I was told to empty out the transmission fluid to take pressure off of the half shafts, and then all I had to do was take them off. Tried taking off the center nut, which is 36mm, but it won't come off. Am I doin something wrong? Are there some procedures to getting this thing off?

Empty tranny fluid to take pressure off the axles???? Never heard of such a thing just after u unbolt everything go down there with a pry bar and pop the axle out. Then after that pop the new one in and rebolt everything back into place. Ive never emptied the tranny fluid even tho when u pull out the axles some will leak out. As for that center nut go at it with an impact gun or if ur fixing urself get a large breaker bar and have some1 hold the foot brake in the car so it dont move when ur tryin to loosen that nut.

For getting your axle nut off, don't use anything smaller than a 1/2" drive. If you don't have air tools, go to the hardware store and buy atleast a 4ft steel pipe that will fit over the handle of your rachet. Leave your car on the ground and just remove the center cap or the hub cap. You should be able to access the axle nut. Make sure you unstake the axle nut all the way. Then put your rachet/socket on the nut and the pipe over the handle. Then just put some force into it. Make sure the pipe yo get is very sturdy, you don't want it to flex at all. I had a pipe that flexed a little and I broke a few rachets, don't ask me why. But as soon as I got a good thick steel pipe those axle nuts came off ok. Those nuts are on there at 181 ft/lbs.

If you want to empty the tranny fluid, there is a bolt at the bottom of the tranny that you stick a 3/8" drive racket into and then just remove the bolt. That will empty the fluid from the tranny. To refill a auto tranny you will need a long funnel or good aim to pour the fluid into the dipstick hole. For a manual tranny you'll need to remove a bolt higher up on the tranny and towards the back then pour the fluid through that. I found that if you buy one of those hose adapters that screws to the top of the bottle, it makes things much easier. I didn't spill anything but the little bit that came out when it was full.

To remove the axles from the tranny (or intermediate shaft on manuals), use a small pry bar to pop the axle free. There is a little ring in there that it snaps into.

Hope this helped.

after you remove the 36mm nut , you need to remove cotter pin and nut for the lower control arm, you need to separate arm from knuckle a few good wacks with a big hammer will do the trick make sure you hit the knuckle part ,,, as for removing tranny fluid you do not have to if it is auto you will hardly spill any fluid at all sometimes manual will spill a bit of fluid if so add fulid like it was stated by touring. anyho, pry axle out of tranny with screwdriver axle should slide past the fork with ease
