Hey peeps, i was wondering when it is time to do a valve adjustment. I have a 98 ex auto with 163k on it and it runs well. Its starting to make this funny sound like an old belt needs to be replaced but i cant figure out which one. When i rev the throttle it revs up the engine then when the revs come down it makes this whinning/whisteling sound. Anyways, is it hard to do? How can you tell if you need a valve job? Noisy valves??Thanks.

It might be time to change your distributor cap and rotor. If it runs good, your in the clear. The noise could be your accessory belts. Squirt a little wd40 or a drop of gear oil on them and they should quiet down if they are the problem, eventually should be replaced. Most likely its the powersteering pump- check belt and fluid level.

Valves don't squeak they tick. You know you need to do a valve adjustment when you can hear them click/tick at idle and it will usually get louder the higher you go in the RPM band.
Like said before it's probably your accessory belts, A/C, Power Steering, or Alternator.
