Default Rear Brake Caliper: Change both or can you change just one?

Quick question. One of my rear calipers is bad, crocked cyclinder, don't feel like rebuilding. Can I just change one of them or do I have to change both left and right at the same time? Mechanics from long ago have told me that you have to do brake per axles, i.e. both left and right, but are they just scaming me? Can you just change the driver side rear caliper? Thx in advance for the info.
