Default Quick Question From a DA owner.

Hey guys,
I have been seeing more and more New SI's around and i am starting to dig them alot, Saw a few at the H-T Marcus Dairy meet and they were looking tight. I was just wondering, whats the difference between Vtec and I-vtecin the New SI. I know this question has to have been Asked Millions of Times but hey i searched I vtec forever, and came up with Nada. PRetty simple question, if you really feel the need to flame go ahead. What i've been told is that there is no variable rocker arm, no high profile cam x-over. This really pertains to the k20 in the New SI. I apologize if this question sounds noobish, but ive just never had a straight up answer from someone who knew what they were talking about.

i-vtec is just like vtec but with variable timing control, which means the cam timing is continually being advanced or retarded as needed for better performance or fuel economy, depending on the application.

As for what your friends said... they're partly right, and partly wrong. In the case of the EP3, it has the K20A3 engine which has only two lobes on the camshaft (intake-only vtec) which is for fuel economy and emissions. It has no exhaust lobe vtec, so it has no high profile crossover.

The K20A2 of the DC5 type S has 3 lobes per camshaft (intake and exhaust side vtec lobes), so it does still have that high profile cross over. The difference is that because of the variable timing control of i-vtec, the crossover is much smoother and will not be as evident as it would be in a B-series engine with standard vtec.

Bottom line: i-vtec is everything that vtec is, and better in every way. It's just that some applications (like the EP) don't get to take full benefit.
