Ok so anyhow, this post is pretty much me and my broken tranny. This is for people who think its ok to mess around and down shift in traffic to chirp there tires. That is bad for the car and this is why because no one believes me when I tell the story.



This is the tranny pieced together from all the parts I could find. I couldn't find a big piece but that was most of it.


Top view, see the Big piece missing I have no idea where that went.


Side shot, with all the pieces gone, I think the differential is messed up how bout you guys?


Little jb weld should do the trick right guys?


well the gears are still good so that's a + I have a spare set now at least.

Well that's about it for my tranny slide show, once again this is what happens if you downshift improperly or some other crap like that. or if the pin in the diff goes bad.

Yea, I laugh about it now but at the time I was like WTF? but it gave me an excuse to get a new clutch when I dident really need one but wanted one. Plus when I rebuilt the second one I got the experience of doing it so.

I dident so much care for the 5 times I had to pull it out and reinstall it because there was a tick coming from a bolt hitting the flywheel.

sorry mang, but you shouldn't be doing unnecessary downshifting in the first place...you're not about to attack the apex of the traffic light

 

WOW!!....every time i downshift or when i'm about to DS i always try to rev match before dumping the clutch...sorry to hear that bro! 8)

**** guy that sucks try to rev match more often could of been a weak link who knows how the guy before u treated it many factors

 

honda trannies don't like downshifting. If you need to downshift, rev matching is a must. IMO, unless you're on a road course, just leave it in whatever gear you were cruising in and hit the brakes.

anyone care to explain how downshifting can ruin your tranny? It would be better if you pressed your brakes then clutch then downshifting? ....confused here

I usually downshift when I cant get any power when im driving, for example third to second at 20mph.

 

Downshifting puts stress on your tranny if you don't rev match. When I said leave it in gear and use the brakes, that was for slowing down. If you want to accelerate faster, then yes you should downshift, but make sure you rev match when you do it.

I think everyone that drives a manual needs to learn revmatching and heal-toe decelerating. It's more fun anyway, gives you something to do when coming up to a red light

Never heard of anyone downshifting in traffic to chirp their tires.

I guess you learned your lesson. If you drive properly things like this don't happen.

He had to of been downshifting hard. At 20 mph going from 3rd to 2nd is not going to hurt your tranny. Doing so at 50 MPH will put a lot strain on the tranny and the engine as your RPMS go from 3.5K to 6K. If you don't have the feel of your car and you hit the wrong gear (mis-shift) you'll destroy the engine. A lot of people downshift from 5th to 4th, and hit 2nd instead, sending the engine past redline to it's early death. How they do so is beyond me, but I see it a lot.

this has nothing to do with rev matching, it has to do with this guy going 50mph and dropping it into second gear so his tires squeal... which is pretty obvious itll do some damage.. your just lucky it was your tranny and not your engine

back onto the rev matching... it is not 'hard' on the tranny to downshift... u can downshift all day without rev matching... your transmission is gonna work just as well... now when all you guys say u rev match, u all know exactly which rpm ur tranny is geared for to down shift every gear? u rev the engine like a ricer just to downshift?

just coast that bitch to the stop sign.. **** rev matching, waste of gas

thats one of the most ignorant things ive ever read on honda tech

rev matching takes stress off both the transmission and the engine. if you are matching the speed of the engine and input shaft with the speed of the output shaft it takes a TON of stress of the syncros and engine when downshifting. when you shift the syncros need to slow or speed up the corosponding shaft to make a shift smooth. you are only helping it by blipping the throttle on a downshift.

You sir are an idiot!

While yes, on a normal d15 with a stock clutch, you might be ok, just shifting and letting out. But most of the guys on here (including myself) ride around on 6 pucks or the like with other various mods. You can't simply just downshift and let out, you HAVE to rev match (double clutch) between gears or you'll snap something REAL fast. It's a learned process, I didn't know what revs were required between shifts, but I do now. I can tell by the sound and the feel where it needs to be. If you get it all just right (upshifting and downshifting) you'll be able to grip and go much faster than if you 'let the clutch do the work'.
