How to make my car better with mpg
I would really like to get better mileage on my 87 Accord, with 124,000 miles on it. I know that I can do the basics to help the engine get better mileage (oil changes, new timing belt, etc.) but what else can I do big time. Is there any big heavy metal stuff that I can take out or atleast replace with aluminum? Any suggestions would be great. My car doesn't weigh more than 2,000 pounds. Just need to cut off 100, 50, 25 pounds here and there.
I'm thinking about taking out my bach seats since they weigh like 50 pounds and I drive by myself only.

they do on large displacment cars...unfortunalty they are famous for breaking apart, and thus sending small pits of alluminum into the ITM, and often, bust of the valves

thats ridiculous...weight of the car has little to do with gas milege when your talking about a car that light....and gutting it will only make the ride more uncomfortable

I want to take out the whole back seat set up. Do I have to go under can to undo all of the bolts that hold the seating it, or can I just do it from inside? I have an 87 Accord LX.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Well I'm not going under the car, but I'm going to do a little gutting. I'm gonna take out alot of plastic and crap I don't need.
I would also like to know how to make my windows go up and down a little better. When they are like half way down they start to get slower and slower. Also when I press the button to lock all the doors they make a sluggish noise. Should I just go in there and spray some wd-40?

Lay off the gas pedal.
The Tornado device is pure sh*t on all cars and trucks, regardless of engine size. I've read some tests and it's a scam. I think I saw a test on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com .

ive actually seen the results in real life...both actual MPG's, and dyno charts showing air/fuel mixtures etx....the gains were minimal, and they are prone to falling apart in just a few thousand miles....and they DO work on large displacement cars.....

why throw away a perfectly good car??.....its not like hes boosting it or anything....just trying to incresae gas milege...
not everyone on HT is building a showcar with a monster engine, just so they can show it off it A/C......

The best thing you can do for mileage is get a highly efficient, smaller displacement, free flowing engine.
Swap a D series in
But really, when you get down to it, swapping out your exhaust will probably end up gosting more than the mpg youd save, I got about 3 mpg with my exhaust (rough estimate) so factor that in and you need to drive 8 gallons worth of gas to save one gallon...if you plan on keeping it a long time its worth it but if youre ditching the car in a few years youll probably end up spending more...
I cant say anything about cats or O2 sensors since youre an 87 so beyond that I dont know....
Like they said a good tune up will do wonders, as well as picking good spark plugs and stop using the A/C...

tune up, and don't strip it out... that's not gonna save you mileage... and your car should weigh closer to 2600 pounds... i know, i own an 88 DX, and 3 parts cars...
as for the windows, they channels need grease... get some spay silicone and grease them up...
also, the fuel injected car (LXi models) gets quite better fuel mileage, and has a bit more power...
a tune up will go a long way in your car... also, check you ignition timing... i'm willing to bet you're ignition timing is off a bit if you're having fuel mileage problems...
btw, what mileage are you getting? about 30mph is about right for these cars, of course with the manual trans...

And of course make sure your tires are properly inflated.
The big thing is to not make any quick starts.
If you *really* want to save money on gas... carpool. I've been doing it for about five months now, it's very noticible how much less gas I'm putting in my car (~ 13 miles each way to work).

Right now I'm getting about 22 mpg in the city, but in the high way it is like 35 which is really good. How would I check the ignition timing? Also what is another name for the epg port, i think that's what is called but somebody said that if I clean it then I might get better gas mileage.
I can't buy a new car silly, I'm only 18 years old and I gotta save up for college.
