Hi

I was wondering which would provide more power for my 94 civic ex coupe. I've researched each motor. Im thinking I should get the B16a with 160hp and Vtec, but will that small amount of torque be crappy. I've heard they do pretty good in civics.

Or should I swap in a B18b out of a teg, they have pretty good torque for a 1.8 12x some. And I've read thier good for boosting(dont really want to boost though). My goals would be to get a high 13 second Civic(over a period of time) lower if I can. I have plenty of cash to do the swap and get it done professionally at a professional garage. I've decided between these two motors because they are the ones I can afford and have it done right, with some money left over to get some mods.

I would like to know which would be better for what Im wanting to do. And which would provide more power as of just the swap(w/o mods)? Do any of you have this done to your civics? Thanks for any help you can provide.

i would go b16 or LS/vtec and only because you say you want N/A and you dont want to boost. I went b18b because i'm goin boost later on.

 

b18b hands down.. "theres no replacement for displacement"

 

if you have plenty of cash to do the swap, get a gsr or type r swap... a shop is gonna charge a lot more than a backyard mechanic, with the same results

yes its faster, yes the gears are shorter, yes it has m@d vtec, yes there is every mod in the world for it, yes you can make your car run 13s with it NA.

whats the point in haveing .2L more displacement when the car has 20 less HP and the longest gears honda ever made for B's?

What I mean by I have plenty of cash, is to do the B16a Swap. with a little leftover. THe complete swap with tranny and mugen ecu from Max HA racing here cali will do it for $2999.

A Gsr engine is like 1500 more or so(could be wrong) But I know I dont have enough for a GSR motor especially not the ITR. I dont have that PLENTY of cash.

 

swap the b16 then save for some skunk2 cams and valve train youl never look back.

 

If you wanna get around town quicker without having to go so high into the rpms then I'd get the b18b. The b16 will feel like a d16 until you hit vtec and in the end it edges the b18b by a small margin.

 

Or you could read one of the 13,000 "what motor should I get?" threads and figure it out for yourself?

Or you could have posted something informative(your opinion on which motor) Gave a link to an informative thread/ Or not said anything at all. Did you read my post I said I researched the engines. I wanted my own individual questions answered.

 

In my opinion B16 is the way to go if you plan on goin the all-motor route, But for less cash "LS" Boosted is the ****.

 

Ok, in all reality you shouldnt waste your time and just get a K20A. And then build it to withstand 25psi for daily driving.

 

B16a is more fun in stock form


When Honda release the 99-00 SI, they choose the B16a instead of the LS motor.
You know why.......VTEC Yo!! High reving short gear tranny


LS is only good if you plan on BOOST

So, you think its cheaper to go LS and boost it, rather than taking a B16 and modding it to hell, to get to a 13 sec 1/4.

The reason I didnt want to go boost, is because I though it would be cheaper to make a b16 go faster NA, than to boost a b18b. Plus then you lose some reliability, I know fast doesnt go with reliable but if you have enough money they do.

a properly tuned boosted ls can handle 300hp on stock internals

let's see how much it will take to make that kind of power NA with a B16

Man oh man i love how you can boost the LS to withstand 300+ HP on stock internals. just love it!

IMO i'll go LSvtec and if thats not enough vtec for you, boost it, you'll never look back, of course if you tune it right too.

 

ls vtec, 300hp turbo b18b's, you guys arnt thinking of the most important thing to a person with ONE car and thats reliability and longevity. Someone who doesn't have a lot of money is not gunna be able to maintain a motor like that.

you need a b16 with skunk2 stage 1's and a good i/h/e combo and a good clutch.

 

a b18b turbo is reliable, if tuned right and if you use the right parts, especially by not cheaping out on the fuel management. I say go b18b, because down the road u can do an ls/vtec and still have more torque/hp than a b16. And if you don't have much money, don't go NA, too costly for not that much hp. As I stated earlier, it'll be reliable for a b18b turbo, but you'd probably have to spend a little bit for the better products, never go cheap. As for longevity, as long as u don't boost everyday, you'll be fine I think. NA motors do have better longevity than turbo, but NA costs a lot more if you want to get over 225whp.

like everyone else said " you'll have more fun with the b16. A honda without vtec is like a women without a *****!!!!

 

B16a...Then down the road a JRSC...Easy 13s at 6 psi if you can drive,and have proper traction.And with EMS,reliable to boot.

 

B16a all the way..love my Si to death..just hitting VTEC makes my day so much better Im planning on turboing it..from what I hear, boost and VTEC are very good friends
