Ok I just went through this myself, the easy way to do this is rent a car dolly (Usually around $50) from Uhaul or a similar service, you just park the front tires on the dolly and go. I don't know if you can do temp plates in this situation cause you need the car to be insured, which means in NY that it must also be registerd.
I just spent over $350 to get my CRX home, I had to rent a f**kin uhaul and a car dolly to get it home. Nobody I knew had a truck or SUV to tow with, so I was stuck... but I got my CRX

YOu can just use a bill of sale here for 30 days as long as your insured.

i always just have the seller write me a receipt with the date on it and have someone follow me home and if i get pulled over just show them the written receipt...this was up in michigan anyways.maybe its diff everywhere else.

I agree on renting a tow dolley. You have no real idea if the car is reliable and it'd suck to get stuck a few hours away from home. I'm sure you know someone with an ample towing car.

If you still want to drive it I'd suggest calling your DMV, best way to get an answer that pertains to your state.

don't worry... as long as you have insurance, you'll be okay.
I think you have 15-30 days to resister it under your name.
Just have the title and a hand written note that you brought the car and price.

Yeah get the vin from the seller, call your insurance and have it insured and drive her home. Just make sure you have bill of sale and or signed over title and take their plates off.
