Default Motor Mount - 98 Accord

I have a 98 Honda Accord, V6 model, 142,000 miles on it. I purchased it new in '98, and it's been a great car with very little problems. Took it in yesterday for an oil change. The service man came back to me to tell me that he noticed that my front motor mount is worn and needs replacing. Being a grad student, I'm on a tight budget and can not fit it in my budget right now. I never noticed any problems with the car or symptoms that something needs to be done. The car runs the same way since I bought it new in 98. Good as new! My questions: Should I be concerned and have the front motor mount replaced ASAP or can I drive it a little while longer until I can get some money to replace it. If I decide to do the latter, what will be some signs that my front motor mount is really on its last leg. (I'm "mechanically retarded".) The dealership said that to have it replaced, it'll be close to $350. Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can change it yourself.

all you really need to do is loosen the bolts from the top of the mount and then place the car on jackstands and support the engine with a hydraulic jack and then remove bottom bolts, jack engine up about 2 " and remove mount.

reverse to install

I would be surprised if the mount really is bad, I have a '99 with 205,000 and they are all ok. The only exceptions would be if the car has been wrecked, in which case all bets are off.

My 99 just had my front mount replace 90,000 miles. I dont think it was ever wrecked

mounts are rubber on metal, with heat and age rubber cracks and eventually brakes ..if a mount is just cracked it can last a bit longer if broken it will put more stress on the other mounts thus damaging them sooner
some mounts are liquid filled you can see when those brake because you got fluid running down near the vicinity of the mount
with age some mounts dont brake but they collapse and dont absorb the shock of the engine anymore thus should be replaced as well
some mounts are vaccum operated as well so if engine start to shake it is not necessarely a bad mount , could be a vaccum hose, vaccum supply or a diaphram not holding vaccum
but again 350 dollars is way way too much ; hell 250 is too much

I have a 92 Accord which shows signs of motor mount decline. From your suggestion about supporting the engine with a hydraulic jack, can you be specific about what point on the engine the jack should be placed? Obviously, I dont want to place it on something vulnerable like the oil pan. I have the official Honda shop manual and it isn't any help.

Best regards and thanks in advance!

you should be able to replace the front motor mount without even a jack underneath. I've never had to support the engine in my 98 to bolt or unbolt the front m.m.

oh and $350?? they're jacking YOU. you can do this with basic hand tools easily.

After placing the car on jackstands or ramps, take a 2 by 6 by 2ft peice of wood and place it between the oil pan and jack and jack up the engine just enough for you to get the mount out after you have removed all of the bolts.

yo toll if you are thinking of replacing frt mount you dont have to support anything just unbolt it and put new 1 in if car is AT leave top bolt slightly loose have a friend start car make sure it is idleling put FOOT ON BRAKE e-brake on as a safety put car in drive and tighten top mount bolt...
if you doind side mount you need to support engine ..if you plan on doing rear mount mmmm a lot more work involved.. let me know if you are doing rear i will walk you through it

The front mount is actually a torsion bar. It keeps the engine from kicking all over the place when you get on and off the gas. Put it in neutral with the e-brake up and have a friend get on the gas quick and jump off real quick while you watch the engine. If it doesn't seem to be kicking really hard it's fine. A little movement is okay. Also, just look at the rubber piece itself. Does it look cracked and broken?

my buddy was trying to replace the front mount on his daughters 98 V6 but couldn't get enough room to loosen the last bolt on the frame/car side.........are you suppose to loosen the engine side first; then jack up the engine to get clearance to access the middle (bolt/nut) on the frame side.

I had the passanger side all cracked inside and pretty much loose and ran it like that for 2 years until I had to do a timing belt replacement and decided to change it out. It doesn't effect your car, but it does make a lot of noise and vibrations. You can use a carjack and a shoe to sandwich in between the oil pan and the jack and jack up the motor so you can access the front mount and take it off.
