Too much oil?

I was chaning the oil on my 2000 gs yeasterday and this morning i noticed i overfilled it.
Basically when i check the oil level its about a half an inch over the max level dot. Should I drain a little bit of oil or having it over wont hurt the car?

Another Question: My hydraulic lift supports died for the trunk, so i was wondering if i could replace them from the ones from an older integra, 94+?

this is wrong.
the problem with too much oil is that if the level is high enough the crank can actually sit in the oil. and that causes bad things when whipping around at 8k rpm.

I think HoUTX98GSR is right.... I put too much oil in my civic ex and it started smoking more than a million hippies at woodstock..... I was burning so much oil.. I don't think it has anything to do with the crank.. I was only driving at 2-3k and had to turn around to drain it...

You cant seriously think the oil pump has absolutely no means to control pressure. And the oil sump is at the bottom of the oil pan, its completely covered by oil regardless if its at 100% or 150% oil capacity.

i think that was my thread awhile ago about overfilling it with oil. everyone recommended me draining some of the 5 quarts out but i haven't yet. i'm ignorant that way. it'll run a little slugish due to the more resistance on the crankshaft being submerged in more oil then it's used to but it should cause any serious problem - as long as it's not too much. and yeah, oil pressure has nothing to do with the level of oil. it's dependant on a little check valve in the oil pump. actually more pressure is perfered over not enough. thats why on my d16z6 motor, i actually shimmed the valve to increase pressure.
the reason why you can't overfill is because the seals won't be able to handle the pressure. the pressure of the oil will force oil into the combustion chamber...thus you'll burn the oil up and ruin your seals, not your pump.
And why do you think more oil volume increases the oil pressure when its all just sitting in a galley, or pool of oil? The oil pan/crankcase is not pressurized.
on the line of the thread two ago, not only will ya force more oil into the chamber because of the oil pressure, but something has to give for that to happen, and that things your piston rings, not good things to **** off. as for the oil pump having a pressure max or someway to relieve it, no
it's just a pump, mechanical in nature, it pumps oil until theres no more oil or until the pressure of pumping it causes it to fail, neither of which are very good things to have happen.

YOur right, the oil pan and crakase arent under oil pressure. But they are pressurized. lotsa parts spinning several thousand times a minute tends to create pressure. air pressure. and the amount of oil put into that pan affects the overall pressure inside the engine. which can cause blow by if its too high, then your burning oil and screwing up your piston rings while losing HP from the crank and rotating assembly having to drag through too much oil and puting stress on everything connected to it. not realy abig deal in long stroke, low rpm motors, but with our engines it can add up
blah,if you added a tad more dont worry about it, a tad more wont hurt any seal or anything if you overfilled it about 1/4 quart and more yeah your seals will collapse,give up and then you have bad news

as i have said, the pressue is dependant on a little ball check valve built into the oil pump. the valve only opens when a high enough pressure is reached (something like a one way valve) so that a constant pressure is maintained. anybody thats actually worked on an oil pump and is somewhat mechanically inclined should know this.

1. High oil pressure: it has nothing to do with oil pressure, which is created by the oil pump, not oil volume in oil pan
2. Blow by: it is not caused by oil volume, it is the ring or valve sterm seal that is leaking
Fact:
1. It cause the crank to beat on the oil it touches in the pan, foam it up, and pushes it out of seal and all.
2. The foam got sucked into oil pump and cause oil pump to pump foam (compressible), so lost of oil pressure.
3. Foam is not a good lubricant, so you got metal metal contacts, wear out all the engine part.
4. Foam take up the whole volume and got sucked into the intake via PVC, thus you burn oil
5. Foam pushes the dip stick out of the tube, and spill everywhere.
6. Eventually the volume got low enough and it stop, by the time foam precipitate into oil you are low on oil.
7. You pop your hood next time and saw oil everywhere, engine low on oil, thinking seal is leaking but couldn't find leak, wonder what the F is going on.
