Default Proper break-in - a few questions...

Well, I picked up my '05 Type-S last night. I love this freakin car.

Anyway, I forgot to ask Acura the proper breakin procedure and I wanted to hear what others are doing. Everyone at work is telling me to just go out and beat the **** out of it but I don't want to do that.

I was thinking no redline, minimal vtec till 600-1000 miles.

Also, someone was telling me to break it in real good to change the oil at the first 2,000 miles. I was reading the manual and it states change the oil every 10,000 miles, but I am going to do at least 5k. 10,000 seems a bit much.

What oil does Acura use from the factory? Do you guys recommend using synthetic or the factory 5W30? I plan on driving it fairly well on the road with occassional open lap days in the future.

Should I wait to get on it or is it OK?

The rings have already been set as well as they are going to. Drive it like you would any other car. That's my advice at least. I drove our Type S w/o reservations, and 80k later it still runs like a dream.

OK. Thanks for the advice.

What about the oil? Do you think I should run synthetic or is the oil Acura uses good enough? I would imagine it is or they wouldn't use it.

I only use synthetic b/c I never seem to have a chance to change theoil every 3k. Either way is fine IMO.

1. Awesome car...You have the right idea minimal vtec/no redline 600-1000 miles

2. Check to make sure there isn't a special factory added oil specific for break-in.

3. If you plan on having it serviced at the stealership they use their own oil. I know the HOnda dealer near me sells it in the parts dept showroom. Normal 5w30 would be fine..but I'd go for a quality name brand.

i got an 05 and i drove it like i stole it rite out the lot....it runs fine....but some people said they need a valve adjustment cuz of that....i think the important thing is to just drive it easy for the first 100 miles atleast so u break in the clutch...other then that it should be fine

there will be a high moly content in oil, initially. leave it there for a while. not certain about the s but the si uses oil for about the first 15k, watch the level.

I am. My dealership offered me a free oil change every other oil change (5K) . As well as vaccuming the car out and washing it. So...I figured using their oil couldn't hurt at that point. Plus, it's under warranty so.

Honda does reccomend not changing the oil for teh 1st 5-10k, I can't remember which, due to teh added lubricants in that initial batch of oil from teh factory.

I would highly suggest the factory recommended 5w20. I prefer Redline personally, but others are good as well.

why? there is not a need IMO for uber expensive oil. As long as you check the fluids regularly & follow the correct OCI, any oil should do. I prefer Castrol GTX, but I am forced to use Mobil 1 since my chick never gives me a chance to change the oil by 3k.

You don't have to run an expensive oil like Redline. The Ford Motorcraft 5w20 is one of the best performing 5w20s on the market, and its relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain.
