What do your parents think about bikes?
I want a bike, but the parents are my biggest obstacles.
My mom doesnt care, her brothers all ride bikes in Pakistan.
but my dad keeps saying its too dangerous the same old story,
!'m 19 and pretty responsible, since I've been driving 3 years now I've had no tickets and the only accident was when an old 70 year old man t boned my car at 20mph. so that wasnt my fault. I'll be even more responsible on a bike because its so much more challanging and dangerous.
So how do you parents like it that you're riding bikes? did they also try to stop you? How did you convince them to let you ride?

well ive been ridin bikes since i was likie 12 and driving since before then. So my parents really trust me plus my dad has owned a bike for quite a few years now.
My mom always said i coudld never get one, and that i just wanted one to make her worry ... i'm a mommy's boy and she's always worried about me hurting myself. But one day i showed up with a bike, and that was that. Five months later, i showed up with another bike. Not too long after that, i moved into my own house, and bought my RR. And i'm 19, same age as you.
i like these kinds of threads. This is where Motorcyclist from Honda-tech open their hearts and tell you to wait till your on your own because of your parents.
*My Parents*
My mom had a son that had 2 different bikes and he's learned his lesson on them. Drinking and Riding, rapped his bike around a telephone pole at 100mph. He did a year for that. I asked my mom if I could get a bike she said she didnt want anything to do with it. I took that as a yes! My dad was the one w/ the pants in the family though. (looks like Mr. Miyagi, but we'ere samoan.) I didnt tell him I was going to get a bike, I was just going to go out and buy one without him knowing ( bad idea, cuz your parents really do care about you). I didnt come home one night because I took the MSF class instead of picking my brother up like I was supposed to.
Later that Night I walk thru my doors with my helmet in my hand. My dad is reading the news paper and puts it down and tells me to sit down w/ my mom by his side. "Son where were you tonite?" I responded "I am taking a MSF class for my motorcycle license" just by the look in my dads eye, I didnt want to finish this conversation and let him know I was gonna get a bike. "I am on the road all the time and I see people get hit by cars on their bikes, I know their fun I used to have one when i was your age." (im 21) He started telling me about him letting his friend try to ride his bike, he popped the clutch and his friend didnt know what to do when the bike was in movement. (bad Idea, trust me my dad learned). My dad ran after the bike with the guy on it. The guy pushed the bike on its side. The rear set snapped off gashing my dads tounge getting 5 stictches on his toungue (sp) and the big slid into my dads legs cutting his legs up.
I kept telling him about the msf course how it takes saftey procedures to riding a bike. I told him I realize theirs dangerous people out their on the road but thats a chance Im willing to take. He then said well if you can afford it. Ill help you out.
Now after I move into my new house in 2 weeks. I got my dad who didnt want me to get a bike. To co-sign for me :-)

I'm with my parents for at least another year. I plan on transferring to another college after next year so i'll be living on my own for a little while. Then when I hopefully get a decent career going, I'll get my own place permanently.
But its harder for me, since the cultures are different. I'm Pakistani and we have to take care of our parents, which I'll gladly do. Our parents dont have any retirements plans or anything.
So I'll have to deal with them for a long long time (i hope) lmao.
maybe I'll take the msf this summer and just get my license at least. and wait till I move out next year.
But I really want one now, so I dont know.

i am indian so i understand what boat you are in. i ride a 04 gsxr which my parents were not for at all but i had a good excuse so they allowed it. my excuse was that at college they have the best bike parkings (not a great 1 but it worked). you just gotta show them that you are responsible enough. i was 17 when i got it, i am 18 now. good luck with you parents
Get health insurance first and then get a bike. An average ER visits will cost you around $1000 or more depending what you go there for. Im 28 and living on my own and my mom (to this day) still tells me to sell my bike cause its dangerous. Parents do really care. Alot of people say the samething that they'll be more careful on a bike cause its really dangerous or what not. But its the other drivers that you gotta worry about. Just be careful and respect the bike.
Yeah, Im thinking of everything before I jump into it. I'll get my license this summer and get a bike in a year or two when I have all my bases covered insurance, and financial wise.
Do I need health insurance specifically? or does the medical on the bike insurance cover it?
When I got insurance on my car, the guy offered medical coverage that'll cover both me and the victims if In was at fault.
do they offer this on bike insurance?
how much do you pay for health insurance? or does your job cover that?
I wont get covered by work for a few years because I'll be working at crappy $10 an hour jobs until I finish college.

My parents bought me my first dirtbike when I was 6 and have encouraged me on all the off road vehicles I have owned. My Dad has ridden on the road most his life and continues to ride both dirt and street. My Mom just likes to put around on the dirtbikes.
In Ohio, I don't know about other states, you have to be 18 to take the test and can take the test at 16 with your parents permission.
My parents wouldn't sign for me to ride on the road at 16 and made me wait till I was 18. I'm kinda glad they did, b/c you just don't realize at that age, or even at 18-20 just inherently dangerous it is to ride on the street, and many people at that time are much more influenced by popularity/peer pressure to do something stupid. In my opinion, relating to my life.
But when I did start riding on the road I am glad I was dirt poor in college and didn't like the I idea of creating more debt. My first road bike I bought when I was 19, and paid a whopping $750 for it. A 1982 Yamaha 650. I bought it b/c I am not the type of person to ride a bike for show, and tend to seek country roads for some high speed blasts. I learned a bunch more of the ins and outs of street vs. dirt riding in the next few years, and I believe my parents were much happier I was keeping a level head on a bike and that I rode b/c I liked just crusing around on a bike, not trying to impress anyone or be on the next insane stunt team.
I then bought a sportbike 4 years later, but by that time, I had already proven to my parents that I know how to ride and minimize the risks involved in riding on the street. They are completely fine with it, and my Dad has ridden all of my motorcycles from time to time.
My advice, take it slow and get an older less sporty bike, you won't get any worse at riding by having a less capable bike, if anything being able to overcome the bikes shortcomings will make you a better rider. It also slowly introduces you and your parents to the idea of riding motorcycles.

My parents didn't want me to get a bike and my dad said if i get one i had to pay for everything myself. So I took the class and told my mom about the stats they gave out about people who take the MSF class vs. those who don't she felt a little better. Then a month after i got my license I sold my built GSR to my little bro used the pink slip for my dads truck to get a loan and bought my sv. the rest is history

Car/Motorcycle health insurance only covers only a certain portion of the bill. Im not too sure how much they cover. On my policy, if i wouldve gotten that coverage, i think it wouldve only covered my Health Insurance deductible. Some insurance company only covers about $1500 for motorcycle injuries. I think you can get higher coverage but youre premium will be alot.

I'm fairly sure when brought up with my parents it will be an overwhelming hate/hate relationship. If they give me the "my way or the highway" deal, I may just be hitting the road, I'll be 23 in August anyways and have stuffed away enough money in my bank.
<-- Has LTD, STD, health, life insurance, and prescription coverage too! And a 401k, I think?!? Ok maybe not yet.

Parents hate the bike. But they trust me, they just don't trust anyone else on the road. My parents told me once I graduated college, I could do whatever the **** I wanted. I guess I just respected my parents wishes. So I got a bike. Everywhere I go on it, my mom wants me to call just to make sure I'm safe.
Your parents care. Get insurance. Get a real job and get life insurance too at your real job. Just because you're off at school (away from home) doesn't mean you are living on your own. Your parents are probably helping with the bills.

Weel my story is..
Iam 19 and will be getting a bike.
Well one day I woke up and the system in my car was stolen... So I woke up and was madd as hell and I plannedo n sellin my car anyway.... I yelle dIam gettin a BIKE!!! Nobody will take anything off my bike(it will be in the back porch)
And I was sounding very convincing to my mother... I was only kidding. But thne I thoguth about it and I love bikes anyway... So i thougth and thougth about it.. And I said f it ill get a bike... my mom tells me here and there that bikes are dangorous..
Well I sold my car and have money saved up and now I have about 4000.. CHA CHING also my friend is getting a bike... so its really coo...
But now I just know when that day comes iama have to hear my mom YELLL.. THEY ARE DANGOROUS... .
Well I already have my story all ready haha
)
1st thing I looked up stats and 140 ppl died in NY state....... There are a lot of riders in NY so in a way thats a small number..
Also I read that 50% of the crashes in NY was caused by the motorcyclist( Speeding etc...)
Then I also read that another chunk of the deaths was caused because of not wearing a helmet etc...
So what I did was write a detailed report on those and others numbers... and I told my mom that this report was for school. I said the report was for "breaking a stereotype" and my stereotype iwas breaking was... Motorcycles are deadly.... OK they are dangorous but ppl say it like if your gettin a bike your dead no matter what... So I wrote the report and discussed those numbers with her and made her relize ther not THAT dangorous (cant spell)
But in a way it is the truth if u cut the numbers down due to motorist error and drinking and riding about 60-70 ppl die in NY state on bikes for no reason (gettin hit from behind etc..)
Ye I relize bikes are dangoruos but there NOT AS dangorous where i live .. like I said in other posts the city I live in is small. And I been to bigger cities "NYC, MIAMI" etc.. and The difference in Drivers Is crazy ppl in the bigger cities drive so crazy and ppl in my city to me drive mellow...
Well thats my plan for when I get my bike in 2 weeks.........

I paid for all the sh*t myself 'n I'm pretty independent; I just can't afford to live on my own rite now.
