Retrofit is the way to go. I have Mercedes E-55 Bixenon projectors with stock 4100K D2S bulbs.

Check out ebay and hidforum.com for parts and info.

a 10k kit is a ricey waste of money.. not a lotta usable light. better off goin wit a 4300-5k bulb in a retrofitted HID projector. i went wit a hella 5k kit and it looks great - huge improvement over stock, but in retrospect, i wish i had gone with a retrofit..

Quick question guys. So are HIDs legal or illegal? Only aftermarket companies that produce them right? I've been hearing YES and NO answers.

HID kits are illegal.

Retrofits are illegal.. but who's going to know unless you blinded a cop with some crazy sky high aiming.

most kits are 'plug-n-play'

be prepared to get dirty doing a retrofit

any user opinions/reviews/pictures? is there a huge benefit by going retrofit over a kit? how much of an improvement over stock are both the retro and the kit? as long as its a notable improvement... the saftey of knowing i wont mess up my headlights is worth the kit... i think.

right i understand the retrofit is better than a kit, i guess my real question is... how much better are they both than stock. me and my friend fucked up his sti when we took apart his headlight to clear it out (it fell over while in the oven and warped reallll badly) so id prefer never ever do that again. it actually ended our friendship... he wanted me to pay for it... but it was his damn idea...but my oven. anyway, so i refuse to take apart MY headlight.

a proper 4300k hid kit with a GOOD rebased bulb and aimed properly is better than stock.

if you're looking to get a good hid kit.. look up this guy on ebay. integra9006hid... his kits are really good. i started out with his kit for a while until i did a complete retrofit.

on a scale of 1-10 .. 1 being easy, 10 being hard to do...

retrofit hits a 4 on my scale. the hardest part about doing a retrofit is aiming. not even cutting because cutting is so straight forward it's not even funny.... aiming is hard because you have to make sure the beams are: 1. not tilted and 2. not off too high or too low

i've cracked my lights open probably 4+ times and i've never warped or burnt anything...

preheat the oven to 400 degrees.... once it's there, turn off the oven.. set your timer to 8 minutes (I find 8 minutes works well... I've never had them in for the full 10 minutes), stick your headlights in and away you go. this is soooo easy.

EDIT:

if you're scared about screwing up, get a spare set of 94-97 lights... all you really need is the metal bracket inside. this can be swapped into the 98-01 headlights.

ill admit, getting them apart isnt hard. when we did the sti, we'd gotten teh firstone completely done and back together... adn were getting the second one back together when it fell over in the oven. it was actually my girlfriends fault, she put them in upside down... stupid girls. anyway can someone sum up the differences/benefits of the hid's over stock? not in the "dude they are way brighterxorz" but in the real im normal and can contribute to the conversation kinda way. this is becoming a project i may spend some time on

HID Retrofit

PROS:
Longer lasting burner/bulb life
Efficient beam pattern. Even lighting, no hotspots
No glare to oncoming drivers
Brighter and more usable light. 4100/4300k
....list goes on and on

CONS:
n/a

spend a good amount of time on the retrofit, research which projectors are for you and i guarantee you, you will be 100% satisfied with the result.

if i wouldve had more time/money, i wouldve done a retrofit, but i have the mcculloch 5300k hid kit. i bought the kit from a place on ebay that gives a warranty on the bulbs and the ballasts. i had stock bulbs, then silverstars, then i went to this kit. imo it is worlds better than any halogen bulbs and gives a ton more useable light, and ive had the kit on for months now and have had no problems with it whatsoever.
