Main Bearings Bad - Need Advice
I took my EX (D16Y8 - Manual) in to the dealer today with a noise coming from either the clutch or the transmission mainshaft (it stopped when the clutch was depressed).
The dealer took the transmission off and found excessive play in the crankshaft. I couldn't get pricing on engines (rebuilt or used) today because most of the shops were closed for Memorial day.
The front bearing in the transmission is also gone, and the 3rd gear synchro has been on the fritz for 30k miles or so.
So, my options are:
1) Try to have the dealership open up the bottom of the engine and determine whether the vibration has damaged the block or I can just replace the main bearings (same with transmission) - about $400 for a firm diagnosis.
2) Get remanufactured versions of both
3) Try to find a used drivetrain
Budget is an issue, but at the same time I can muster the funds to make sure I don't screw myself in the long term.
The one rebuilt longblock I found today was $2500 installed w/50k warranty.
An engine install is over my confidence level (and tool level - no lift, only basic torque wrench).
I'd appreciate some help in thinking about the tradeoffs I'm making in these three options.

Considering I can get a D16Y8 swap from my local junkyard for $400, yes, yes it is

Dealer labor rates here (Austin, TX) are pretty competitive with the general market, and the service departments of two of the dealers here are some of the higest ranked in the nation. That makes my life easy.
I don't debate that pulling the engine to is a $400 job - which is what is required to get a look at the mains. The question is whether the diagnosis is even worth doing.
BTW - estimate for Removal and Install of the engine (regardless of source) is $1100.

OK, well I have more information.
D16y8's are about as expensive as a B16A2.
A long-block rebuild is $1700. (A B16A2 is about the same + a $350 core charge. - BTW - I'm having trouble finding a good FAQ on what is required for a swap.)
Tranny with 75k miles is $250 in town. A used D16y8 is $900 with 81k miles on it.
This is leaning me to a b16a2 swap in a big hurry - but I need a good parts list to really calculate a price (and factor in the cost of an engine mount.)
