I bought a tranny that was sold to the seller as a 1997 JDM ITR tranny. I got it cheap due to it needing a rebuild. So, last night after the mainshaft and countershaft were assembled with all new sleeve sets, my friend noticed that the case had the adapters for champfered bearings. So, he asked me to count the gear teeth, mainly because he thought that ITR trannies used the sealed variety.
Anyway, after counting all the gears on the MS and CS, we compared it to the Helms. Turns out that the gear ratios match those of a GSR. He had a set of B16a2 gears that he knows are from an Si, and the teeth numbers were not the same between my tranny and his gear sets. He also had a GSR tranny, and my gears match those exactly.
Can anyone verify the gear teeth or ratios on a 97 JDM ITR tranny?? Or did I and the seller before me receive a GSR intead of an ITR??
Thanks,
Ken

JDM ITR FD ratio is 4.785, hopefully someone can give you the exact teeth.
There's a possibility 97 ITR and GSR could be the same ratio. I also think some older ITR units had the other bearings.
Does it have a limited slip differential? ITR does, GSR does not. I think that would be an easier answer.
What stamp(s) are on the tranny case?

There was no stamp on the case, or a VIN badge. The final drive was not a 4.4, it had the same number of teeth as one from a GSR.
So, from what you guys are telling me, I have a GSR tranny. Thanks.
It was told to me that the ITR diff blew and was replaced with a GSR diff. Now why someone would take the time to install the chamfer (roller) bearings and related hardware is beyond me, so I guess it was a GSR tranny all along.

96spec JDM ITRs and GSRs have a 4.4 f/d so thats no cause for concern as both are the same...so if it has the same numebr of teeth as a GSR then its a 4.4 final drive!
JDM GSRs (Si/SiR-Gs) had a torsion LSD as an option which is completely different to the helical LSDs that were fitted to ITRs (all years) Early JDM LSDs had the tapered roller bearings, later 98spec (from 1999 on i think) used the sealed bearing.
96spec ITR gears are not the same as GSR gears.
96spec ratios are:
1st......3.230
2nd.....2.105
3rd.....1.458
4th.....1.107
5th.....0.848 (4.4 f/d)
GSR ratios are:(including JDM Si-VTEC/SiR/SiR-G)
1st.....3.230
2nd....1.900
3rd....1.360
4th....1.034
5th....0.787 (4.4 f/d)

Ok to simplify things,
All USDM ITR, JDM '96-'97 ITR, & CTR are all the same ratios/LSDs (4.440 FD):
1st......3.230
2nd.....2.105
3rd.....1.458
4th.....1.107
5th.....0.848
FD: 4.440
(All B16 transmissions use the same ratios as above, but LSD was optional in Japan as said before).
and,
JDM 98+ uses same 1-3 gears, but GS-R 4th and 5th gear with 4.785 FD.
1st......3.230
2nd.....2.105
3rd.....1.458
4th.....1.034
5th.....0.787
FD: 4.785
Done.

PS, this should be a sticky.
