A/C Recharge Question/Dilemma
I was hoping some people could give me insight on my situation here.
I have a 90 Integra, the A/C compressor, coil and clutch were replaced about 5 years ago (10/14/2000) in Houston. Well, I need to get the system recharged...it's not cooling off out here in Arizona. Normally, I wouldn't care that much, but it's damned hot around here.
Now, the car originally had Freon since it is a 90. But, about 7 or 8 years ago the Federal gov't mandated that all new cars used R134a and that older systems be converted.
But, since I had the A/C system replaced after that mandate, would the system most likely be using R134a or Freon? I looked up the records from the repair bill and it doesn't say anything, I looked for any notifications of a change to R134a(such as a sticker under the hood) and nothing.
This is mainly a money issue, 90 bucks a pound for Freon or 9 bucks a can for R134a...about 3-4 qty each.
If I cannot get a definite answer, is there a way to flush the system with R134a without having to convert the system? I was thinking that maybe they could use a few extra cans(weighed as a pound) and run them through the system...is this possible?
I also tried to call the shop, Kingwood Honda/Acura Specialists in Houston, but they are closed on Memorial Day...go figure.
Any input or insight is most appreciated.

the price of 134 just went to 90 bucks a pound (at least in california). the chepest was is go to mexico for r12 or 134a, if you can.
to help you out with your question there should bea underhood sticker somewhere.otherwise wait till tomorrow and call the shop.

DO NOT attempt to recover the refrigerant if you dont know what kind it has in it. like he said above, ask the shop; they shouldve put a sticker in it anyway. wisconsin is the most strict of all the states when it cames to servicing a/c, its against the law to touch until you pass the test. i dont know what the laws are in utah/arizona though.
well, i found out that the system has R12 in it. damn...well, i can deal with the heat in arizona, it's only temporary...i'll be back up in the mtns. of utah in no time.
