Default MSD soft touch install p/n 8728

Well here it is, after alot of searching and not finding any true answers to how to do a install with the MSD soft touch I thought I would do it myself and show everyone else .

First thing is to remove the distributor cap then turn the car over till you line up the screw to the notch on the backing plate.

After the rotor and the backing plate are removed you will see the wires to the coil that we will be connecting to.

The connector with the square terminal end is the negative (-) to the coil. The wires colored black with yellow tracer are the positives (+) to the coil. After reading the wiring schematics the black with yellow tracer wires are joined together, one goes directly to the fuse box the other goes directly to the ICM (ignition control module). You do not need to splice into these at all. The MSD just needs the positive (+) on the coil to switch the soft touch on. I just added a connector like the one that is already on it to the RED MSD wire and tightened them together with the black/yellow wire.

The white with blue tracer wire is the negative (-) to the coil. This is the one you need to cut into. I cut a small portion of the middle so I could solder the GREEN MSD wire to it.

This is the wiring schematic from MSD that we are using as a guide.

We need to solder the WHITE MSD wire to the GREEN MSD wire. You do not use the violet wire at all so just cut it or tape it up.

Next what I did is bought a 1/8" rubber grommet for the wires to get sealed in the distributor. I drilled a hole in the side of the dizzy then fitted the grommet. I will tell you it is a very tight fit. I used some white grease to slide both wires through the hole.

Next connect them back to the coil. Should look like this.

The backing plate need to get cut to allow the MSD wires to run clear without any problems.

The black MSD wire should be grounded to the engine. I place mine near the coolant housing.

When all done it should look like this.

And I place the MSD here for the time being.

Good Luck
