Default RPM shift....

to all the drag racers out there,

out of curiosity, what RPM do you shift when you race your prelude? (on the strip).

I've been shifting at around 8500rpm, is this too excessive, or too early? I know the H22A only makes power up to about 7000rpm, well, stock as my motor is...

I flatshift too, when I drag race. I know it's bad for the gearbox, but it keeps the revs up, and it's only reserved for special occasions..

I'd think about 500 rpm below peak power output(I guess you gotta know what that is). That way power just keeps peaking.

You shift at 8500????? Is your motor stock? That seems wayyy to high.

I shift right around redline when I am trying to go as fast as possible. Even though peak power is at 7k, someone here explained it to me that by reving a little high, keeps you in VTEC mode in the next gear, so you have more power right away.

If you were to calculate your optimal shift point in every gear (using a dyno plot and you gear ratios) you wouldn't need to ask this question. I shift at a different point in every gear. (i.e. 1- 9400 rpm, 2nd- 8200 rpm, 3rd- 8000 rpm ,etc).

If you don't have dyno plot, guess. It'll still be better than redlining every gear.

Ack 8500...ouch don't do that. The car stops accelerating at 7200 rmp and thats where you should shift it to keep it in vtec when you throw it in gear.

take it to the redline. into the redline.

our tach is off by 300 RPM or so at redline. (4th gen) I hear the 5th gen is more like 500.

the fuel cut is like at 7550 or 7600, so you have to find the right spot.

even on a BONE STOCK prelude, if you multiply the torque out through each gear ratio, you make more power at the pavement at redline then you do at peak torque in the next gear.

This only applies to the first few gears.

I didn't do the math from 4th-5th... I was doing it for the sake of the 1/4 mile.

I'm pretty sure that holds up true for 3rd-4th gear... on a 4th gen at least.
