Tranny Rebuild?
Okay here's the deal. I just got a used tranny from the Junkyard and seems to be no good but I was stupid and didn't get it checked before the 90days was up. So now I need to rebuild my tranny.
The Honda service place I used to go to estimated me a pretty good price.
Work to be done:
New clutch
New shift (it's dying, Real loose)
and almost rebuilding it (fixing what needs to be fixed. I need a few new bearings and such)
$1100
This seems reasonable but I don't have the cash. I need my car can't survive with out it. Can't work, play or see my man.
BTW it's 91 civic 1.5 5 speed
Should I try to rebuild it myself? I don't know what I'm doing but I follow directions well. Can anyone recommend any books, I have a Hanes for my car) Or should I bite the bullet and figure out how to get the money together?
I'm very willing to work on my car. But not sure if I should in this instance.
Anyone who's undertaken this or might know something about it please advise me!

Well it seems as tho I don't know how to tell a good used tranny cuz I just got one in Feb for $200 and it's not good. Any pointers on what to check for to make sure it's good would be helpful.
Just buy one from a (junk) yard that will warranty it! You will pay more for it, but at least at that point you are covered.
Don't try rebuilding a transmission without first buying the factory manual!!! (commonly called a Helm's) Sit down with a cup of tea and the manual and try to see if it's something you can do.

if you still have the old tranny try to rebuild that one and keep the working one as a spare(one form junk yard). when i needed a tranny rebuild i thought is was a very difficult process, but it was not. it was harder for me to get the casing back on than changing out the synchros, bearings and seals. help is always good. ask your "man" to help. dont forget the Helms, i couldnt have done it with out it.

Is that removed/installed?
For the amount of money we're talking, I would get a full rebuild from these guys:

The completely rebuilt trannys are around $800.
A new Exedy clutch is around $100.

Yeah but the $1100 is labor too. For rebuild, clutch, and shifter.
Thanks for the input guys. My man doesn't know what he's doing with it either. he's there cuz I can't lift the tranny by myself. He's never worked on a honda before mine. he's a mopar baby.
I can't find Helm's anywhere. I have a Hanyes but it's skips stuff. I'm thinking about getting a chilton's. where do I find helm's manuels?

Don't waste your time or money on a Chilton's. I bought one way back before I knew any better, and after trying to do one brake job with it, I decided its only useful purpose was to give me an extra 1/2" of height by putting it under my floorjack.
Haynes is much better than Chilton's, but Helms is the best by far. It's the OFFICIAL Honda Factory Service Manual - the one the mechanics at the dealership are using.
Oh yeah - check eBay, too. Usually "crx manual" in a search will pull 'em up.
