Turbo Rebuild Complete Torque Specs Here!
Just posting this because I searched here for a turbo rebuild write up and couldnt find anything in the past.I'll do a write up with pictures,diagrams,specs.My digital camera is broken so thats why Im not doing it yet.
Turbo-to Turbo manifold bolt: 40-47 ftlbs
Torque the compressor nut to 18-20 in-lb (that's INCH-pounds NOT foot-pounds)(1.5-1.6 ftlbs) Then continue to rotate the nut an ADDITIONAL 90 to 110 degrees. DO NOT use any sealers on the nut or shaft threads--the nut is self locking.
Tighten compressor housing to 145-165 in./lbs (12-14 ftlbs)
Turbine housing to 185-200 in./lbs.(15-17 ftlbs) Make sure turbine wheel does not contact the housing in any position.
Backplate 8 ft-lbs ( Correct me if Im wrong found two different torque specs on this.)
Oil drain flange 34ft-lbs
Oil inlet flange 38ft-lbs
Downpipe flange to turbo exhaust housing Torque to 32-40 ft-lbs

Except that torque ratings are dependant upon fasteners used, and there's all kinds of different fasteners used on turbos. Those specs might be right for 1 turbo, but there is no universal spec...

Hey its better than nothing. You know how many threads there are about this subject with no real technical answer? #1 most common response "make it snug"...
No information is better than bad information...
"make it snug" makes sense to a mechanic, and if you tell somebody that and they strip a bolt, it's their fault. You tell someone an incorrect torque spec and they strip a bolt, they're pointing fingers at you.
I have NEVER torqued the bolts holding a turbo together, 90% of the time you couldn't even if you wanted to.

well most small torque wrenches that do in/lbs should fit there! am talking about the ones that torque a MAX of 12-14ft/lbs
well myself i didnt torque any bolts around the turbo just tighten until they are snug, but i have this small torque wrench which i really find useful for torqing small bolts in tight area!
to get an idea what am talking about i got this one:

I know which wrench you are speaking of. I think what tony is trying to imply is when the turbo is clocked there are a few bolts that you can barely even tighten with an open-ended wrench less alone fitting a torque wrench in there.
