what needs to be done to ref a zc(into a ef) in CA.
i plan on doing a zc swap in a crx and i need to know what has to be done to make it (ref) legal in the state of CA. , thanks for any help (oh and i have done a search but i have not found a thing about reff'in a zc)
call the smog ref and make sure you can ref it. I'm pretty sure you cannot because they never made a zc in america and it has no corresponding engine code with any us motors. I know that a d16a1 is pretty much the same thing but I'm almost positive that you cannot ref the zc as a d16a1 or the single cam zc as a d16xx.

I've had a DOHC ZC in my 90 CRX Si since 1998 and I have read almost everything anyone has ever posted about ZCs and smog legality in Calif. So far, the most common statement has been "Since the DOHC ZC engine was never available in any U.S. spec automobile (irrespective of model year) it is not ref-able (ref will see ZC and see it's the blacktop DOHC and shake his head no)
BUT!
If you have any hard experience proving this untrue, I for one, would love to hear about it. I love ZCs, especially how well they take to forced induction
So I would kill to build up my spare ZC to the hilt and get it reffed right after.
Please cite your reference(s) if you can. Thanks

Thanks</TD></TR></TABLE> well a local ref (at southwestern) did tell me that he would pass a zc (i asked if it was true that zc's are un-reffable) as long as i put the smog components on (but sad to say, i didnt pay too much attention to what he was saying, cuz my zc was allready turbo'd and i knew that wouldnt pass) well this was a while ago i've since picked up a shell and i have a zc(so i want to ref it)
also i did buy a reffed zc (crx) from a guy (who was local) so i know it can be passed, i just need to know what to put on the engine

--> Any chance you can go back to that ref and write down everything?
--> Any chance you can get in touch with the guy you bought the reffed ZC crx from and ask him all these questions?
This would be awesome if I could ref my beloved ZC. I have a CARB EO sticker for my Greddy turbo so that means I would be "legal" if a cop popped by hood, etc.

From all I've heard, it's not possible for all the reasons noted above (I've got a ref'd B18c in my 89). Is that based on "hear-say"? Ya, kind of.
I'd recommend that you do exactly what TAG says.
What does consern me is when people make comments like; "I know of a guy that knows a guy that did it". Without talking to the actual individual that got it to pass, possible mis-information can get started.

I'd just head down there and see if you can talk to him for a minute or two inbetween appointments. Thats where I got my b18c CRX ref'd. The guys there are really cool, and although I've heard that you can't REF a ZC, if there's any way you can, it'd be at southwestern. Those guys don't seem strict at ALL.
Anyways, good luck and let us know what they say!

Awesome, I sure hope you can do this and post good details, etc.
I, for one, wouldn't even bat an eye to drive down to LA, or wherever to get my ZC CRX reffed. That would just make my whole year to have a BAR sticker under the hood.
Thanks for posting this question/info

Hatchinprogress;
I'm not trying to be a poop head or anything but it's possible that the Referee didn't know exactly what engine you were talking about. They are not required to honor any comments made in the past. I'd hate to have you show up with the engine installed and then have them change their story.
As for you having had a car with a ref'd ZC, you have made some comments about the car having been stolen and then gotten back. Is it possible that the car was ref'd, stolen and engine removed, then a ZC installed?
I'd recommend that you get the block ID numbers and bring them in with you when you talk to the Ref. Include on the paper that the numbers are written that it's a twin cam motor.
I'm just trying to prevent you from getting burnt.

I went to the ref about 2 years ago.
I went with my b16b motor with the ctr tranny.
I told them his engine is the same as del sol expect its not listed on your paper as a smogable engine.
He was like ok, make sure your obd1 with the correct ecu and make sure you have a cat and pass emissions.
to bad I couldn't pass emissions or I would have had a b16b ref.
There are cetrain motors that pass, most jdm engines I seen have failed smog, my b16b failed, my b16a second gen motor failed. My friends USDM GSR failed we all had the correct setup. It doesn't mean your motor is JDM or USDM it will pass. Get it pretested to find out if your really going to pass before going..Even though u have the correct setup ecu, obd, wiring etc. That doesn't guarantee that you will pass!!!!!
I am going to try and ref my tsx engine see what happens
