Default Turbo DA's... lets see your setup!

hey guys, i know its rare to see a turbo build DA but i was wondering what you guys have done, parts list, how you made everything fit, kit you went with, etc..

im thinkin about turboing my DA but i'd need a engine rebuild or a compression test will do if everything checks out, then throw in a b16 trans..

its not really rare. you probably just hear of more DC turbo, but there is quite a few DA turbo cars. and if manufactuers actually make a turbo kit espicially for that application then its not gonna be rare.

i went homemade, did everything pretty cheap. using an internally wastegate t3 off a saab9000 i found in a junkyard. got it rebuilt.

bought some 90 steel bends, 2.5 inch radiator hose for couplers, ebay BOV, dsm 450cc injectors, walbro 255lph fuel pump, and a turbo edit basemap.

ill post some pics for you tonight after i get off work!

theres a big controversy about ls and b16 transmissions.

b16 have nice short gears. only problem is the 5th gear which is also short. im not sure which is the worst, i believe the s1- you're in 5th gear doing about 80-90 and you're at about 5000 RPM.

some people argue these short gears arent necessary for turboed cars. some people say the short gears has helped them. i have even read that a guy swapped b16 and ls transmissions and they made absolutely no difference in his ET's.

it has alot to do with the "feeling" of the car.

LS trannies are longer, especially 3rd gear, but if you're running boost who cares? IMO it kinda helps get traction and sling shots you.

many people actually swap the LS 5th gear into the b16 transmission so they can actually drive their car on the highway.

a tranny to find would be a 92-93 gsr ys1. its got short gears but better than the jdm b16 trannies.

if i had access to a decent priced jdm b16 transmission that i knew didnt grind, i'd probably buy it, dont get me wrong.

but if there's nothing wrong with your existing LS tranny just save the money for some other goodies.

i know my car is kinda a peice of ****.. im gonna get it painted this summer, and some other fun stuff.

dont mind the no bumper, havnt gotten around to cutting it yet. other things need to be fixed anyway so i'm just waiting.

i'm actually boosting that thing with 155k original miles heh. it seems to be running fine.

my semi ghetto setup consists of..

t3 turbo off an older 80's model saab9000. i believe its rated .42, .48 not sure though. i bought a rebuild kit off a saab performance site, and it seems to be fine.

internally wastegated turned all the way up . it runs at 10psi for a split second.

a manifold that a guy made on homemadeturbo.com, pretty nice peice.

downpipe consists of a volvo elbow peice, with 3 inch pipe welded to it. ehh

cheapturbolines oil lines

walbro 255lph fuel pump with DSM 450cc blue top injectors.

turboedit chipped ecu with a base map.

"monza" sequential blow off valve.. identical to the HKS

custom charge pipes made from jcwhitney 2.5 inch 90 bends.

2.5 inch radiator hose from napa for charge pipe couplers.

intercooler is pretty small, forget the measurements, i got it from "streetimports" for 179 bucks shipped..

aluminum radiator from streetimports. dont really like this radiator, i think its causing me coolant problems, so i ordered a OEM 92-00 civic replacement on ebay.

the car is running hella on the rich side..blowing alot of rich smoke. i need to take it to get tuned. a guy from homemadeturbo.com street tunes turboedit on a wideband. hes located in NJ if you're near by.

i still had to take it to the track and couldnt get better than 14.2 at 100 with 2.1 60 footers.

anything else you watn to know hit me up!

not sure about the details of the turbo or cams or what not...but this chit was QUICK! The b20vtec build alone got him mid 13's. Never seen him time his car after he threw on the turb kit though....btw, this pic is about 2 years old now

whats there to argue with? with a turbo engine, some people want longer gears, which is good for top end. but in my opinion, shorter gears are better for n/a cars.

I'll end the gearing part of this thread.

The right tranny is one that will keep you in your powerband the best. An LS tranny is perfect for low revving (relative to Honda's of course) LS engines, but a GSR or b16 tranny is perfect for the high hrevving engines. Now if you change your powerband, aka put a turbo on there, then your gearing will need to change for optimal power output to the wheels. Now a LS won't do, but neither will a B16. It would have to be custom made for the car actually.

The common saying "shorter is better" for gearing is not necessarily true for say stock LS engines. It all depends on where your powerband is and how you shift. This is EXACTLY why engine designers let the powerband fall at the end, because when you shift you will consistanly be at that peak of your powerband. I saw a site once where you could calculate exactly what gears you would need by looking at a dyno graph, but I don't feel like searching unless someone really really wants it . IMO, I'd stay with you stock tranny as long as your revlimit is stock. Once you change that along with the new powerband of a turbo, you may want to look into a different tranny to better keep you in the correct power band. .

BTW nice blue DA there.
