Greddy Type-S vs. HKS SSQV ???
Which of these BOV would you prefer, the Greddy Type-S or the HKS SSQV? I'm planning on getting the Drag III kit and I have a choice of the BOVs. I'm thinking of running around 9 - 10psi of boost, btw.
What are the performance and sound benefits of one BOV versus the other?

I think the greddy is somewhat louder, but it all depends on boost level. The HKS SS has a more "full" sound to it.. it's hard to describe.

Yeah,but don't set the spring too soft or you'll vent boost when you don't want too.
And I would go with the HKS SS BOV,even though I have the Greddy on both of my turbo cars,I think the HKS is a better unit. If I had it to do over again that's what I would do.

How do I know what the best adjustemt is for a BOV? What is to soft and what is to hard?

Too tight will create a lot of pressure in your IC piping, causing the air to fight against the turbo (compressor surge) which is a bad thing.. you can really damage a turbo this way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought compressor surge was when the throttle body closes and the air doesn't vent fast enough(through the BOV) causing it to flow back into the compressor. In that case, a too soft a spring causes compressor surge, not too tight(hard).

Hard/tight means it takes more of a pressure difference between the piping and manifold for the BOV to open.

Softer spring makes it easier for it to vent boost... even if you do not want to.

No.. the spring and its adjustment have everything to do with the way a BOV vents boost between shifts. The screw, depending on which way you turn it, will either put more pressure on the spring (making it harder) or backs off the spring (making it softer). The valve that's connected to the spring will open easier when the spring is softer.. so if the spring is too soft, as boost is building, some of the boost will leak. If it's too hard, all that pressure will stay in the piping, possibly causing compressor surge, until enough force pushes the valve/spring to open and let boost escape..causing a louder blow-off.
I love my Greddy Type S. Its pretty loud at only 1psi and can be heard clearly by the person driving next to me. If you take it up to 5psi, you can really scare the shiet outta some people.
In fact, I tried it out this morning while in light traffic on a lady holding a cig out the window(I guess to prevent smoke from getting into her car
). Slowed down to a about 20mph so I would be at here window when I let off. So I stomped on it and let off at only about 2psi, which was quite enough to scare her into dropping the cig and shooting the finger at me. Mission accomplished!!! I love my Greddy BOV.
