R-12 alternative... but sucks
Hey everyone... as you know, its getting hotter and hotter. I'm sweating my pants off in my 85 CRX because I was low on freon(R-12). So I had time today and decided that this shop can evacuate all the r-12 so I can either go with 134 conversion or freeze12... I decided with freeze12. The mechanic took everything out and put in a little less than a can in and his gauge said it was within range... but it doesnt blow cold air! Its a little cooler (measured at 63 degrees from the vent) but I'm still sweating. What can be wrong? Could the expansion valve have anything to do with it? Thanks for helping me keep cool.
The vent temp should be about 45F with the air on recirculate. Your system should take at least two cans. I'd say take that Freeze12 out and put two cans of 134a in there. I just put a new compressor on my brothers car and put two cans in and it's still a little low, but blowing COLD!!!!!!
yeah, he should of put in more than mess than a can. anytime I have evacuated a system it has always taken more than two cans. Did he vacumme out the system as well? I have found that you have to fill it up to right around the max level for your ambient temperature (less than 5 psi from max) for it to be any close to the cold you are looking for. Case in point, I put enough freon in mine (r134a) to get to 45 psi, not suppose to go over 50 for my temperature. and I felt my wife's arm and it was COLD.
If you want A/C that works, settle for nothing less than real R12. Face it, R134a and other alternatives just don't work well in an R12 system. Yes, it costs alot. But it's worth it.
well, its about 80 degrees outside right now... how many psi should it be on the low side? I cant seem to find any info about the correct psi.
