Default You Guys Love Teggies as Well? I thought i was the only one!

Have a 2000 Intergra (uk number 05499) Type-R and i love it! Have you heard that VTEC singing it does? I'm sure you all have

But!! Having a couple-a problems :-(

1. It drinks oil. Like, a top up every 2 weeks. I do drive it quite hard, but doesn't everyone? Is that normal? Where do i start?

2. Gears crunch from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th but only at VERY high revs. I'm talking about bouncing off the rev limiter when racing idiots in GTIs. I've been told it's the syncro - but what's involved in fixing that?

Glad i found this place.....

Welcome to HT

1. how many miles/km's on the car? is it stock?

2. I believe the synchros are made of brass. If they are worn, they need to be replaced. That means disassembling the trans. You could always try another trans fluid to see if that helps as well.

welcome, it is generally accepted that first time posters also include pics of their ITRs...
we love pictures here

as for your questions:

ITRs are infamous for burning oil, it is fairly common among owners here to have to add oil in between oil changes, especially if the car sees a lot of Vtec...perhaps switching to a heavier grade of oil might help to alleviate your oil consumption a bit

as for the grinding of your gears, thats a tell-tale sign of bad synchros
it will require opening up the transmission and replacing the synchros
unfortunately, dealers here in the US do not sell synchros separate from the gearsets
so its costly whenever it has to come to that

Wow - 2 replies in 7 minutes? I love the Internet! Thanks a lot.

Car has done 76K. I currently use fully-synthetic oil which is the best stuff i can find. It's using about £40 ($70US) worth of oil every 5 weeks. I've never heard anyone mentioning that before.

Oh and one thing i forgot to mention re the gear crunching, the clutch is only about 3,000 miles old - so that should be ok. I don't know what you mean by is it stock? Sorry - i'm new to all this

I will post some pics of my lovely Integra tomorrow - I can't believe i've had it for 6 months and haven't taken any photos yet.....

If it was a problem with the clutch, chances are you would have a problem getting into every gear, not just the ones you mentioned.

as far as oil consumption goes, search the archives and you will see many many of us have had oil consumption issues with our R's. Sometimes its a problem that will continue to get worse, other times its just from driving hard.

do you get any smoke from the exhaust under WOT or while coasting? I would also check the PCV valve on the intake manifold. you could also try a compression test or a leak down test and those can rule out possible problems as well.

OIl problem seems to be a problem for many ITR owners, and the honda synchros seem to be about the only weak point in ITRs.

Check in on http://www.itr-dc2.com/forum/ its a UK forums purely for ITR owners (or anyone who is thinking on buying one at some stage)

The only smoke from the engine is with very high VTECing, and even then it's nothing really noticable unless you're looking for it.

Thanks alot for all the help - it's into Honda Blackpool on Tues for diagnostics so i'll let you know what they say.

Thanks again

Rock.

What brand/weight of synthetic oil is that? I ask, because it seems to be reported that Mobil1 5w30 is one of the fastest to burn on our motors. It is very thin for a 5w30.

Try fresh tranny fluid, that makes my shifts better. I have 61K and no tranny issues, but lots of people do have shifting problems. I don't drag race my car really, and when on a track I shift smoothly.

The Mobil1 oil we get in Europe is actually very good. I've been running the 5w50 with great results.

You could also try Motul (very expensive), or Omega (extremely expensive).

If your car still burns a lot of oil you should try either an oil cooler and/or an oil breather kit ( http://www.theoldone.com/components/breather/ ).

for ur tranny grinding, it's not about ur clutch. u can shift at like 8100 or so, but try to bounce off the rev limiter because by the time it catches ur engine revving that high, you probably hit atleast 8500+ rpm's.

to replace a synchro, you need to go to a transmission shop to do this. they take out ur tranny and put in new synchro's and a lot more other stuff.
