Default What should I offer for '89 hatch

Hey guys,

Wanted to join the EF crowd, and I found a car. '89 Hatch Back, not sure of the model though, all black bumpers and moldings, light blue.. faded paint. Not a bad body, though, small dings. The car is a 5 speed, not sure of model, it has the fake leather interior, with a bit of rips on the driver's seat, but not terrible, just alot of sun fading. Apparently, the motor overheats and isn't in great shape.. but I plan to swap.

What should I offer for this car? I am going tommorow with cash in hand and gonna lowball and see what I can get.

I'll find out the exact model tonight, I'm not sure of it. Maybe that will help!

Okay, I'll steer towards that number, if not lower.

I'm willing to walk away and try again later, just so that he knows I'm not BSing and if he wants to sell, he needs to go for my price.

I don't think anyone else is going to see the car, either. Its in between about 5 vans in the back of the building. So I've got time to think about it.

id find out why the motor is overheating....
paints faded...
interiors ripped and faded....
if the bumpers are all black and the car's blue, maybe they were replaced... accident? is the title clean?

id say 500-700 bucks though 700 seems kinda pushing it for a DX that really doesnt run....

Well, I know now that its a DX Model. Its all completely stock. Bumpers are black unpainted stock. Apparently it just overheats at times, but I don't plan on having this motor in the car for more than a month. 150k on car. Good clean body, few tiny "dings" in the fenders, thats it. paint could use a wax. No rust. I'm considering the car for nice body (for its year), and the fact that I can atleast drive it for a few weeks before I swap.

oh i always thought only the moldings were black. well, in that case 700 or 800 sounds good as long as you can drive it home....

No deal, he was asking $1000 and wouldn't budge, and the car would not run, had a blown headgasket and a blown head. Wasn't impressed, told him he could let it sit for a few weeks and if hes lucky, I'll be back with another $400 offer.

thats not a DX. vinyl seats aka fake leathers. and black bumpers and that blue is a STD model and i bet its a 4spd manual not 5. only MAIN difference with DX is cloth seats and 5spd and 92hp.

Yeah, I thought about that. I do need a driver, though, for the time being. I don't know, I'm a SOHC fan, and I'd love to get a '89-91 SI, too. Its just, not having a garage, if I swap I need to do it all at once, more convenient than having a shell sitting in the girlfriend's parents garage while I source out the motor and everything I need, ya know?

IC... then make sure the radiator doesn't leak. Or anything for that matter. One more defect you find is $$$ off the sale price... Hopefully it will be like a thermostat or somehting along those lines (easy jobs). Ask him when it overheats, and when you test drive it, test the steering. Steer side to side (not abruptly either) and check if the steering feels loose or vibrates. Go over speed bumps and listen for noises coming from the front and back of the car. If you can, do 60-70 and see if the steering vibrates, or it steers in one direction. Test the brakes, do a couple stops from 30-40.

Stop and put the car in 3rd, try to get the car rolling without taking it out of gear. I believe this is to test the clutch. If you don't stall it means the clutch is slipping too much, or it might be opposite??? Anybody can confirm this?

But yea, pay attention, and if you hear weird noises, say WTH was that? Whoa man!! The wheels are gonna fall off! or something, u know?? lol... that always works

Hey man, awesome info and I'll definitely keep all that in mind, as well as all the other little things I try and point out to get the price down or to find out the condition of the car.

Unfortunately, the headgasket is blown, and he claims the head itself is blown.

Time to check out a few other EFs around town..

thanks !

might as well.

Get a car that's running right in the first place. That's my thoughts on DDs.

to test the clutch, put the car is 3rd or 4th gear. Rev up a good amount (no need for a 6k rpm screamin rev - 4k should do) and pop the clutch. If the clutch is good, the car will stall. If the clutch sucks, itll slip. anyone with a brand new clutch can get their car to roll from 3rd.... just takes some clutchin skills.... and gassin skillllss.... car skillllsss... ninja skillllssss.....
