Default Clock acting up, other electrical gremlins

Okay, starting today when I started my car, the clock was at 2:xx and the minute numbers were just counting up from 00 to 59 then repeating, it went on for about 5 minutes, then i turned the car off and restarted it to see if it would still happen, it did, but in addition to the clock i had a "brake lamp" warning light on. I got out and had a friend step on the brakes, all bubs lit up. The brake lamp light went away next time I started the car, but when I went to adjust the clock it started just ticking up again. Now it stays until I try to adjust it.

On the way home when I started counting up, if i turned my headlights on and off it stopped, but If i tried to adjust it just started again.

Any Ideas?

My clock has a mind of its own too. i just wait for it to stop and then try to reset it close to the nearest hour. Havent found a permanent fix for it, maybe because i never bother looking

Resetting ecu didnt work for me.

The button on my 4th gen got stuck and it was doing the rolling minutes you were talking about. i used a pen knife to kind of jimmy the button out a bit and it stopped. Now the only way to set my clock is to wait until 1:00 oclock and reset the fuse. I have no idea why it resets to 1 and not 12:00 like every other clock in the world. . .

If it stays still until you try to adjust it, that would indicate to me a stuck button like syntax mentioned. But if the brake lamp light is related, that doesn't make sense. Weird gremlins.

Wierd gremlins indeed.

I don't think it's a stuck button, turning it both ways will adjust either hour or minute, and it returns like it's supposed to, though it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. Awhile back I was going to reset my trip odometer like I always do after I fill up, but it had always been sorta jammed and I had to push and twist and bang the dash for it to reset, one day it reset and now it stays at 000, the last 0 starts to roll up but then clicks back down.

My friend has come up with a theory that the heat might have something to do with it (southern Texas, it's hot as a bastard when I get in after school), and it makes a little sense because on the rides home in the evening as the sun is setting the clock doesn't start counting as soon as I start the engine like it has been since this first happened.

As for resetting the ECU, I have a new P14 which should arrive tommorow, maybe once I put it in this problem will be solved.

If anyone else has any input, I'd gladly appreciate it.

I don't know how relevant it is, but the previous owners of my car had an alarm system, and removed the alarm itself before they sold it to me (cheap bastards), but left in the horns, wires, and other components (without telling me, too). Could all that electrical crap taking up space cause electrical problems?

I remember my auto tech teacher telling me when I found out one reason I don't have A/C is because the pin for the A/C signal in my ECU is fucked up/fried, that improper wiring may be the cause, something about wires being spliced in the wrong places and the alarm crap taking power from the wrong places. I'll ask him about it tommorow.

I'll be pulling all that crap about before I drop in my new P14 anyways, If that's what caused it I'm sure as hell not letting it happen again

My trip meter once did the same thing. I took apart the gauges and fiddled with the gear on the back of the button until it worked again. Now when I reset the trip meter, I don't press the button in all the way, so it is always off by 0-9 miles, but it no longer gets stuck. Heat could be a culprit, plus you're dealing with 13 year old little plastic gears and levers.
