1993 Honda Accord (Warnings?)
I'm looking at possibly buying a 1993 Honda Accord in central Texas. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot wrong with the car. A friend of mine just graduated from College so he's going to sell it to me and get something a bit *ahem* nicer...
Here's what I do know about the car:
4 Door
Auto
Cloth Interior
166k miles
16 Valves
He says it hasn't been in the shop in 6 years, and pretty much hasn't had any problems with it. He changes oil every 3k, etc etc etc...
He does have a few electrical gremlins. Every now and then, like every 4 months, the car wont' start. Like totally dead. He'll go inside and come back out 30 minutes later and it'll start right up.
Uhm, other than that, what do you guys recommend I take a look at? I don't wanna buy this and then find out in 3 months that it needs a $900 bolt. Get what I'm saying?
What kinda gas mileage can I expect.

I get about 27 mpg on my '93, but you may get more or less depending on the condition of the engine and how well maintained it is. I would expect a little less though since the one you're looking at is an automatic

I get around the same 26ish MPG mixed driving, all highway maybe I would see 30 mpg. Check to see if the radiator is original, they are known to be a somewhat weak link. The no start situation is most likely the main relay, easy fix. Anyhow I have a 93 and it's got 334,000 miles on it, original engine, pretty much original everything, even CV Joints. As long as the boots aren't torn they do last. OH and the HVAC ****, you WILL be replacing it at some point so might as well buy one now and have it on hand. The one that controls the cold/hot air mix breaks very easily. Again cheap fix, and also you'll probably have trouble with the antenna working properly. And I'm still on the original alternator. Great car if you ask me.
i ve got a 1993se with 199000 on it and still going great. THat little start prob.... since youre in tx its prob pretty hot.... the main ign. relay is cracked... that why it wont sometimes....it'll cost you about 90 buck from honda... don't bother with a used part, its probably already cracked or going to be soon. part is oem anyway...very common on all the 90-93models. nothing serious just needs replacement every 10 years or so in hotter climates. ps. 93 was the best year made but you'll prob. need a distrebuter cap/ rotor soon too aswell...avail. aftermarket 25 buck tops
