Default Ahh crap she finally died. Suggestions?

Quick background, my automatic 2000 87k miles accord transmission has been slipping for about a month. Only between first and second, but if I went easy it was fine.

Then I get off the highway two days ago, come to a stop, then try to go and it's revving way way way past the gear, then jamming into gear and jumping forward. Then getting back up to 4th gear I have to tap the gas and let it get into gear so it doesn’t rev up to 7k+ rpms and jam back into gear hard.

Now today, I babied it up to 4th, then all of a sudden its dropping gear, revs shooting up, and I had to brake like mad and the whole way its going in and out of gear with the revs shooting all over. Then it finally shakes and lurches to a stop. If I put it in D1 I can drive around okay, but as soon as I go into 2nd and up it goes in and out of gear. Getting to 4th is impossible, I was doing 80 then suddenly it drops out of gear (or down to 3rd) and the revs shot up to 8000.

Oh year, when it I had to baby it into gear while it would rev way beyond then slam into gear, I'd get a bunch of white smoke coming out of my front vents in the dashboard. Oh and the tranny was flushed about a week ago (didn't seem to help).

So now that the car is mostly dead, and money is a MAJOR issue, should I try to find a cheap auto tranny and get that installed, or pay 600+ bucks for some shop to open it up and tell me it's another 1400 for a rebuild.

Basically what's the best case scenario for how cheap it might be to fix. And worst case? I'm thinking it's majorly fubar'ed due to my ignoring the problem for weeks on end. I'm figuring I can maybe get a tranny for 300-400 bucks (with less miles) then pay for someone to install it.

Thanks for any suggestions!
