got a tach, need to know how to hook it up
ok i picked up a autometer sport comp 5 in tach. i got it used so naturally it didnt come with any instructions, and i just need to know what wires do what. theres a red wire, a green wire, a black wire, and a white wire. theres also some smaller wires 2 light blue and 2 brown. im thinking maybe the smaller wires are for the 4 or 8 cylinder setting? right now the two brown are hooked together and the 2 blue are not. so what wires do what? anyone have the instructions?
nevermind, i got instructions from their site, but one thing im confused about is on their site they say the loops are brown and qroance, mines brown and blue. is this nothing? am i fine?
also should i hook the tach directly to the (-)neg terminal on the coil or will hooking into the blue wire be just as good? same for the engine ground, should i go all the way out to the engine as specified by the directions? or will an in-chassis ground be just as good?
Hook it up to the blue wire off the distributor, thats the tach signal. Not sure about the other wires though. We just installed one yesterday that just had power, ground, illum, and the tach wire.
yea i found the installation instructions on autometers website. the smaller wires are for 8/6/4 cylinders. im just trying to figure out if it matters that the colrs dont match on autometers website. and im wondering if its better to go directly from the coil or if it doesnt matter. cause if it doesnt then ill save myself the trouble and just go off the wires right there at the dash. same with the grounds...
dude.. there's a blue wire behind your cluster, Take a look. If you know whats up , you can just splice into that ( be careful) that wire seems to be there for all ED's even if it didn't come with a tach. Thats how i origionally put a tach in my first ED... then whats left.. ground and power?.. you can hook it up to the REd wire, which i think is cluster lights?.. (not sure its been a while) and black for ground... make sure the wire you splice into (if you do) is fully contacted and safely secured.. (all wires behind cluster) or your tach will lose power sometimes, or wont read ^_^
since you have some extra wires... search it on google. I think there should be some small write ups.. your meter might be different from mine, but i found a write up from google like 3 years ago. I can find the wiring instructions if you cant find it, i think i still have it.

i know all that. ive completely rewired my cluster so i know the wires are there. i just want to know if it would be better to go directly off the coil or not. same with the ground. i mean i know it will *work* but i want it to not just work, i want it to be hooked up optimally. thats the basis of my question. i want someone to confirm that it doesnt matter before i go the easy way.

well looks like you were wrong. with both cut, the rpms were too high. about twice too high. it worked with the brown connected and the blue cut.
