motor swap
Hey let me start out with introducing my self. im a 21 year old nissan guy.. love nissans... a buddy of mine has a 99 gsr manual... he had this car turboed untuned and what do u know blew his motor.. we believe it was his piston and or rings... he found a guy with a ls wrecked from the rear its an auto 98. we spent the day yesterday removing the ls engine we got it back to the shop and its on a stand right now. we are almost done pulling the gsr engine. his plans are to put the ls engine in with the gsr tranny and put the turbo back on and get it tuned... my questions are do u think a vtec head swap is better on this turbo setup or is it better to leave it ls head... respond with answer to both performance and safety. also question is since this is an auto engine we are putting in what exactly is involed in making this a manual ready car... we got a manual ls ecu on hand. he has some money to spend so reagrdless there will be some internal build up deff the crank pully is getting changed and probly cams and other minor stuff for his turbo setup... im looking for opinions on what we should do as well as a guide and any warnings.. all opinions welcome. thank you
we do have our own shop 2 work in with lift and almost all tools needed 2 do anything even weld.. the only things we dont have is the equipment to machine so if we do go that route then a local shop will do that work for us
The turbo LS setup is loved by many and can be a great setup if done properly. A turbo lsvtec is in the same boat, but will require a bunch more work.
If you do the lsvtec, plan on balancing the rotating assembly. You can get away with stock internals with moderate boost levels, but you'll need to upgrade to ARP rod bolts, and then resize the big end of the rod (preventative measure against spinning bearings). Stock LS pistons would be ideal. Regarding the lsvtec components I have to recommend getting a complete kit from Golden Eagle (with the headgasket and head studs), or someone else offering a similar kit.

what would be a better setup as far as performance and safety ls turbo or ls vtec turbo... also is it better to use the gsr tranny or use a ls tranny both manual... also where is a good site for all integra needs as far as mount cams etc...
im planning to go turbo soon and i still have the ls,i was going to go VTEC but i was told that you have more torque with just the ls no VTEC.so im staying with the ls.hopefully that helps

if you want less problems...just go with the LS
GSR tranny sure why not? shorter gears should be fun.
You can boost a stock LS motor safely at around 10 psi or less TUNED.
I've read people going 50-80k miles on a stock block LS at 10 psi.
if the motor is out and you have the cash, get some JE forged pistons, eagle rods, ARP rod bolts, all new bearings, ARP head studs, for the bottom end..
With that you could boost up to 15-20 psi. I've seen some people do wild things with stock sleeves, make sure you hone the cylinder walls.
PLEASE use DECENT engine management!
Uberdata is cheap! Or if you want go hondata, go AEM EMS, I don't care just don't use a FMU and a SAFC to tune or something stupid like that not worth it.
have fun
